Question…I'm retaking FAR. I did fairly well the first time for not even finishing. I have the worst attention span in the world, and I'm trying to decide if it's worth my time to rewatch the lectures since completely zone out 90% of the time. What do yall think? I have 5 weeks. I've figured out I do much better rewriting my notes then trying the MCQs.

@ bama, I think rewatching the lectures helped me out allot for my second FAR attempt. I watched them all straight through, then attempted the problems….with only 5 weeks I would suggest you focus more on weak areas. My issues when I failed was the simulations, so I redid 90% of the long form question in the Becker texts and nailed it the 2nd time.

    BEC 84 Q4 2010
    REG 79 Q1 2011

Something that I just recently started doing on F9 NFP in Becker. I got two homework grades in the 50's after studying the material so I decided to switch it up.

I did each question and wrote down the answer and why i thought it was that answer. I then when back and looked at all the answers and made sure to see what my logical thinking was versus if it was correct and if not, to see how I should be thinking. I think this works out really well for me because it made me see how I was thinking of the answer the wrong way, versus how I should be thinking about getting the correct answers.

Just one of my many little methods to try to master this tough material.

@ bama. I used Becker and never watched any lectures and only read the chapter once. I never made any notes. I focused all my energy on questions to prepare for the exam. I would create a flashcard with the concept from the text for every missed question. I did all questions (including supplemental) at least 3 times and did government and NFP 5 times before the exam. By the week of the exam, I tried to score between 95% – 100% on last pass through all questions. On the day of exam, I made sure to leave 1 hour 30 minutes for the SIMS. I ended up needing all that time on the SIMS. I ended up studying around 135 hours over 6 weeks for FAR.

By the way, go light on IFRS. It was hardly tested on my exam. Focus heavy on government and NFP. I knew that and was still surprised how heavily it was tested.

Best of luck studying and in five weeks.

@bama, I retake FAR on 8/29. I was told by others to not re-watch the Lectures unless it is a sections you struggled on. For example. I did bad on NFP and Gov so I will probably watch those 2 Lectures. Other than that I plan on reading through the book and taking notes. I agree with MOMCPA that you should do question through out the day. I have kept my Becker stuff at work for BEC which I take on Saturday and through out the day I answer questions. It breaks things up so that you don't feel overwhelmed or rushed or anything. I think it is helping me. I have a lot of points to get before I pass and the Sims are kicking my butt on every test.

Does anyone else have any pointers?

    akb9874,

I think that gov't and NFP are really just a ton of memorization. Honestly, I wouldn't waste time re-watching any lectures on them. Just do the questions or the recommended MCQ if you did Yaeger and memorize the rules and regs for them. I would only re-watch lectures if you struggled with the actual concepts on a topic and want to really understand it.

@ppierce – Gov and NFP is super confusing for me…maybe I should write notes instead of watching the lectures then? It is just so much info and a million rules that are hard as hell to keep straight. Do you have any other pointers? I am all about getting advice! I need it badly!!

I'm using becker videos, book, and passmaster. I dont see any sims for practice. Does anyone know where can I find them? I might buy Wiley testbank once I'm done with Becker, does that have sims or just the MCQs?

@Mercy – I used Becker exclusively. Lectures then multiple choice. Once I finished I watched all the lectures again and did the supplemental multiple choice and the sims. Becker was great. There was nothing on the exam that i hadn't seen before.

@sanumoor – Wiley test bank has SIMS as well as MCQ

@mercygrace – I agree with minimorty that you should allow 90 minutes for SIMS.

    FAR 4/1/11 - 89
    AUD 4/15/11 - 85
    REG 4/29/11 - 80
    BEC 5/13/11 - 85

Just got back from taking FAR. Way more IfRS than I expected! I am solo glad I used the Wiley online test bank. I moved through the questions as quick as I could and left myself 1.5 hrs to do the sims. It really paid off! I feel comfortable about my answers. Just like mentioned on the AICPA website, every sim had an authoritative literature tab. This helped out when I was “stuck” and I was able to bobble and weave my way through each question.

My question to all of you out there: the first set of questions were no problem. The second section was extremely challenging and I know I missed a bunch. The third was, well, I'm not sure. I feel good about the sims. Based on feelings, how did I do?

I hope lots of IFRS questions get thrown out!

    BEC: pass
    REG: pass
    AUD: pass
    FAR: pass
