    Auditd0rk– 1 point was with the old format. In 2011 research is worth just as much as any other SIM.

    @Peanut

    With just under two hours until I sit for FAR, I'm super glad you shared that! I definitely won't blow that off 🙂

    The research question is free points. You gotta get it right. (However, I do believe partial credit is awarded.)

    Looking for a little guidance. I have taken FAR twice using Yaeger and both times I got a 61. This is my final section needed to pass the exam and I would like the third time to be the charm. What would you recommend my plan of attack should be? Should I buck up and purchase new study material and completely start over? Stick with Yaeger and go through all of the videos again? Or rewrite my notes from Yaeger and find a different test bank and practice sims and just spend most of my time reworking MC and sims? Also, what about a cram course?

    Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

    Thanks!

    My suggestion would be to spring for a new comprehensive set of study materials and start over. If you were at like a 70 or 71 I would say stick with what you have. But two 61s means significant deficiencies. I thought Becker was great for FAR. Good luck!

    How do you guys/gals study for the SIMS? FAR will be my first exam so I'm not sure what to expect on the SIMS.

    I went through all of Yaeger's minimum SIMS in the Wiley Book and I did okay on them for the first time around. Some of them really stumped me. I did well on others.

    Are the SIMS in the Wiley Test Bank software similar to the actual test?

    @RedRage00 I didn't really “study” for the SIMs specifically as Becker tends to lack in this area. The best way to study for them is know all the calculations you may need to do and all the journal entries associated with them. With my FAR exam I had 1 research question, 3 journal entry simulations, and 3 long calculation simulations (think pensions, amortization, etc…).

    I agree with mnCPA on the format of the Sims. I took the FAR yesterday and definately had trouble with the journal entry ones. I should have practiced more on those with Becker, but at least now I know if I have to retake next window. I have read this board long enough to know that it is impossible to guess on how well you did on the sims due to pre-test questions and partial credit, but it doesn't stop me from wallowing in self-pity for a few days before I start studying for the next section.

    Ok, so I am as ticked as I ever have been in my life! My boss, who is a director for one of the departments at the city, said in our supervisor's meeting, “… and Joe (me) re-took his final section of the CPA exam. (turns to me) How many times is this now Joe? Is it like your 4th time? Well, Joe thinks he'll pass this time (smiles and laughs in disbelief).”

    I bit my tongue and refrained from saying anything to her. I wanted to ask her how many challenging tests she's taken in her life. She holds some sort of certificate in the parks and recreation profession; I took a practice exam on this and I passed at 100%. Do I tell her something or be the big person and let it go? I don't think I'll be working at this place within a year, so maybe I'll let my career choices speak for me.

    In response to preparing for SIMs. I'd say Wiley's test bank does a great job. I practiced using the test bank 1 month out before I took FAR (July 1). It really helped me! There were tons of SIMs with journal entry questions and tons with long calculations. Put it this way: I left myself 1.5 hrs to complete the SIMs during the exam. I was done within an hour, so I used the extra half hour to verify my calculations. About half of the questions were journal entry type – so make sure you know how to do them!! Remember that (1) if cash goes out first, then it's a deferral; and (2) if an expense gets charged to a payable first (meaning cash goes out later), then it's an accrual. This helped me out big time with the journal entries (thanks to Yaeger!!).

    jnavarro–So obviously this woman is not a CPA? As I was reading what you wrote I wanted to kick her in the face.

    Regarding the SIMs- The Wiley SIMs did help you? I was just reading this morning someone was saying the Wiley SIMS were easy peasy. I'll have to try some out right now! Wiley was a good 87$ purchase on top of Becker.

    @ Peanut: that was funny! I'll let you know who she is and maybe you can kick her in the grill for me!!

    If the other person thought the SIMs were “easy peasy”, they are probably prepared for the exam then. Honestly, I thought Wiley was tougher than the actual exam… maybe it was just me.
