no71spleaseParticipantFor those using CPAExcel:
What is your strategy for getting through the material? I am taking the test 5/19/14 and only on the bankruptcy lesson in the business law chapter (as of 3/29/14). I tried using the exam planner, but always end up dumping the schedule into excel and changing some due dates since some nights it would have maybe 2 lessons that are estimated to take 3 hours each due on say a Tuesday, but then an estimated 2 hour only lesson due on Saturday. I work full-time and try to study 3-4 hours a night and full days on Saturday and Sunday about 8 hours each day. I wish the exam planner could consider the day of the week and allow you to put in the max hours for say weekday vs. weekend.
My study hour routine has worked for my other 3 tests and I just want to know how others are tackling these lessons as I am struggling to stick to my usual plan and get into the lessons. I feel like I am behind on where I should be. I like to finish the lectures and questions with 2-3 weeks so I can do Wiley Test bank and go bank through the material in CPAExcel.
Do you watch the videos, takes notes, whats you order of studying text, video then MCQ? I appreciate all tips and strategies even if not using CPAExcel. Also, does anyone know the heaviest tested areas for REG? I feel like I haven't seen many posts about it like for FAR everyone stressed bonds, leases, Gov't and NFP. What would be the lessons for REG?
Thanks so much and good luck everyone!

What is your current progress? I am taking my exam on the 17th of May and I am almost done with the videos. Actually today I will be done with the videos!
I posted some stuff earlier in this thread about CPAexcel and what I ended up doing. Let me know where you are at overall and I can give you better advice.

MassCPA2014Member@dante, to be honest, the answer to that question you posted confuses me a little too…I didn't think any stock dividend where you weren't also offered property or cash was taxable, but the answer suggests otherwise. I think it's unlikely that'll come up on an exam, but I can't explain for sure why that's the correct answer.
Meanwhile, I've got 5 days til test day and while I feel good overall, I'm realizing that there are SO many different #s to remember (180 days, 90 days, 20 days, 30 days, 6 months, 12 months, 3.5 months, 2.5 months)…hopefully I can keep them all in order.

AnonymousInactiveCan anyone explain this question:
1. Violet incorporated her Sole Proprietorship in 2013. She transferred equipment with a basis of $125k and FMV of $160k subject to an $80k liability assumed by the Corporation. The loan was taken out 1 day before the transfer, 3 years after the equipment was purchased because Violet knew it would provide a tax benefit.
What is Gain/ Loss recognized by Shareholder AND what is Shareholder's basis?
A: $115k and $160k respectively
Here is where I am having trouble, I thought gain was not recognized if after the transfer they remained in complete control of the newly formed Corporation?

ReflektorMemberI'm sure this has been addressed before, but does anyone know whether exams in April will be testing updated 2014 info, or still 2013? For example, medical expenses are subject to a 7.5% AGI test, but that bumped up to 10% in 2014. I am told concepts are more important than exact phaseouts and numbers, but I am still sure that some of these numbers will need memorized. Which year should I focus on?

JParticipantYou will need to know the new numbers. For the most part, not knowing the new phase outs is not a huge deal, though. You for sure need to know the new 10% medical floor (which is still 7.5% for ages 65+).

FinishorgiveupMemberto all
this might be a stupid question, but, I am hoping someone can answer it.
I am planning to use Becker, Wiley online banking, CPAreviewforfree to help me to pass this exam.
Should I finish Becker (including simulation questions) or should I finish all of the multiple choice questions for all three then back to simulation questions?
Sorry about this silly questions

KenadaMemberTake a deep breath Qlad!
i hope you have done alot of mcqs practice too as that is very important to do.
Based on your MCQ's progress tell me how are you doing – are you scoring in the 80's plus ? Which topics are you weak in ?
Have you made any notes on the chapters you were weak in when you started preparing for the April exam?

MassCPA2014MemberExam on Friday, just took the first Becker practice test and got a 70. That's lower than I've gotten on my other practice tests for the exams I've passed, and from the problems I got wrong, it was just pure memorization of certain numbers. I feel comfortable enough with most subjects on the exam, but then I see these questions come out of left field and get a little nervous. I think I'll be OK, just really don't know what to focus on these last few days…
