Jspann225Member@FARtogo2014 I was responding to thechapman comment about Olinto teaching F10. I was under the impression Olinto taught F10, because I thought they mentioned it in a previous section, but it was another 3 or so hours of Gearty. Overall, F10 is not bad.

TootsieMember@samdiegoCPA, I went to college there, lol! I think it's GASB because it is a public university, and it does not say not for profit, in which case, it would be FASB.
I just did chapter 7 sims today and they took me over 2 hours to do! I feel much better about that chapter now. I am skipping to chapter 10, my weaker area, and then will circle back to 8 and 9 this weekend probably.

jpowell31Participantquick poll – how many of you are working full time while studying?
this is my downfall…my eyes and brain are so done when it comes time to put in a few hours at the end of the day (assuming i work through lunch and end between 5:30-7:30)..busy time is finally slowing down, though….so i'm checking these threads to jog my interest and memory when i can during the day instead of the news or researching travel i can't afford as i normally would if i got a few spare minutes. hoping to take off a full week of work prior to taking the exam mid-August. that SHOULD be enough time for review…right?
i did three other exams (more than once), you'd think i'd have all the answers by now. where's the motivation!?

golfball7773Participant@jpowell I have been following this thread for awhile. I started studying 2 weeks ago for FAR and plan on taking Aug 2nd.
I find that my mind power depends on the day. If I did a lot of recon work with accounts, etc, I find that my ability to concentrate is very low. Which also means my productivity is also low.
I find that drinking coffee at 4 helps me a little bit. I know it is bad for you but it does help. What helps even more is if I stop at the gym before studying. My mind is more refreshed and don't waste time playing Candy Crush or researching fun travel ideas 🙂
I am little behind on my studying due to lack of motivation, but hopefully I will kick it into gear this week 🙂

sstephensonMember@jpowell – I am working full time and studying and although it's hard, it can be done. I try to always make sure I get to exercise during the day like @golfball suggested because it helps me focus. I agree that coffee is not a great additive but I have found that Almond Breeze makes a Mocha iced coffee and it has become a must for me until I finish, haha! The hardest thing for me is giving up my entire weekend or finding other things to do when I need to study. I have made a rolling cart (kind of like the old teachers carts) with a large screen tv and my laptop attached so I can roll it on the back patio, use it in my home office, or even bring it to the bedroom so I can watch videos while I fall asleep. It might seem silly, but having it on the large screen helps me focus and it gives me something other than a small computer screen to look at, since that is what I do all day!

jpowell31ParticipantHa – i do agree with being able to take breaks, getting downtime, some exercise in and eating well enough as well. that's when i slept best, studied best, performed best.. unfortunately work has taken more of my time these months with a promotion, i just bought a house and i've had health issues changing these dynamics. i also can't ignore the fact that this is my last chance before AUD expires, which adds to my anxiety. oh well….best of luck to everyone!

CPAchroniclesMemberAnyone else struggling with NFP Accounting?
June 23, 2014 at 10:45 pm #598196
jpowell31ParticipantI'm just getting back into it @R.agboola so i won't be of much help now but i do remember a lot of people discussing with their issues with NFP and govt last quarter so you're not alone. strangely enough i felt like (and my score report proved) that these were my stronger areas. once i get through everything by the end of the month again hopefully i can be of more help! do you have anything specific you're struggling with?
June 23, 2014 at 10:48 pm #598197
CPAchroniclesMemberthanks so much @jpowell31 ! And i guess just grasping the concepts… like reclassifications for the net assets mostly. Also when and how to recognize revenue on certain things is confusing me
June 23, 2014 at 11:09 pm #598198
nicole2035Member@jpowell you have one more test to go, so i don't want to hear it! What helps me at work is going for a 15 min walk outside (kinda impossible since it's so hot now). Or i will sneak go in a break room, lay my head down and simply close my eyes. When your brain can truly check out for 10-15, it works wonders.
@Lstevens cumulative effect depends on how many prior years are presented with current year financial statements (for comparative purposes). If you're doing a retroactive change in principle for an entity switching from LIFO to FIFO, if they only present that year's statement, you adjust Retained Earning for the current year only. The entry would be to correct RE as if FIFO was used in all previous years.
If you have 2 previous years presented along with current year statements, you will need to adjust each year for it's cumulative effect. So Year 1, Year 2, and Current Year will need adjustments.
The entry would include a debit or credit to Retained Earnings. I don't know of a good example, but i do know you never touch any of the Income statement accounts because they're cleared out every year, your debit or credit to RE will already include them. You should only adjust Balance sheet accounts on the other side of the entry

CPANOVICEParticipantCan someone please clarify the treatment of the following from the accounting changes and error corrections section:
How changes in Accounting estimates are handled?
Changes in accounting principle?
Changes in accounting entity?
Error correction?
I understand the basics but I am getting confused with terms such as retrospective, retroactive, restatement etc. Also, if there comparative financial statement presented, how would this change the treatment of he above 4 items? if there is only current year financial statements presented?
Can someone please help clarify this in simple terms as I'm so confused right now.
