    Tarheelgirl,

For DTAs and DTLs, keep in mind *why* you're recording them and it'll be easier for you to figure out *which* to record. A Deferred Tax Liability is a liability because you are paying less tax now, but you will have to pay more tax in the future to make up for that. A Deferred Tax Asset is an asset because you are paying more tax in the current period, but you will pay less in the future, almost like a prepaid asset; like “prepaying” your tax.

So when you're looking at a problem, figure out how much is recorded on the financial statements and how much is recorded on the income tax statement. Then see whether the difference will result in more or less tax paid now. That translates to a DTA or DTL.

You can visualize this with the JE (slide 10). Income Tax Expense is the amount recorded on the books, based on the accrual GAAP income. Income Taxes Payable is the amount that comes off the income tax return. The difference between the two is your DTA/DTL.

@jennibfox, yes, you can receive your score report via email if you choose to, and it's usually within the next business day after scores are released, so hopefully tomorrow. I am thinking about rescheduling FAR on July 7. What about you? Did you struggle with the sims?

Yes I struggled with SIMS as well as IFRS. I had a hard time understanding what they were asking for on the SIMS. I mean I knew the concepts but I wasn't sure what they were exactly asking for in the format (worksheets). I know a lot of people say to know the journal entries and I studied these but wasn't really useful for the test I got. I think that is the hardest part every test is different and everything in the book is fair game!

I couldn't agree more! Hopefully brushing up on our weak areas and doing practice sims for each chapter will get us that 75. I've heard that writing out all the journal entries in the book is helpful, but there are so many! What is your study plan?

Tootsie- I am making online flashcards and really nailing out the multiple choice. I am using brainscape to make my flash cards. I am putting important journal entries and formulas on these flashcards so I can review these over and over. I haven't really revised a plan for SIMs yet. I am just going to practice as much as I can and maybe review some main topics in my intermediate accounting book to get a grasp on the worksheets that I may see.

@Gian Thanks for the explanation and slides. Those slides really break it down, will probably print those off.

I am starting to understand the differences and what is a DTA and DTL while calculating the tax. Now to just find some problems with JEs in them so I can practice those. I will keep studying these tomorrow.

Hey guys – I'm new to the group. Taking FAR on 7/29 and have been studying for the past few weeks with CPAexcel (seems to be a good resource so far). Focusing a lot of my time on the videos and MCQ's right now…will tackle SIMs later. Look forward to gaining some encouragement and confidence through this thread. 🙂

How many hours per week are you guys studying given the date of your exams? Ahead/behind schedule?

    FAR - 71, 76
    AUD - 72, 67, 74
    BEC - 71, 69, TBD
    REG - TBD

@warrreagle1015 Auburn grad? I am studying around 6-7 hours a a day. I test on July 1 for FAR and I get more anxious each day. Also, I think I am ahead of my planned schedule, but happy I decided to begin studying a week early.

    FAR - 93 - 7/1/14
    AUD - 94 - 7/25/14
    REG - 92 - 8/30/14

I have to retake FAR for the fifth time. I keep scoring in the 70 range ( I want to cry EVERY TIME I think about it.) On top of that, my REG score expire one day before I plan to retake FAR. BUT I'M NOT GIVING UP.

Can someone please help me with the journal entry to record the “purchase of a bond”.

    I think it's.

    Investment in Bond $$$

    Cash $$$

    FAR:68,71,70,72 (Rematch 7/2/14)
    AUD:88
    REG:76
    BEC:75

Solomon, you are correct. And you also take into account premium or discount for interest income I would think. Am I right? Are you taking it the first week of July?

Hey Everybody, I am new to this site. Seems very informative and useful. I just received my passing score from Q2 for AUD and am now halfway done. 2 more to go. I plan on taking FAR in mid July and can't be more excited to get it over with. I am using WTB, ninja notes, cpaexcel books. One thing I have found useful, do not be afraid to go back and utilize your old textbooks from college intermediate courses. I have found that they have a lot of explanations for concepts such as bonds that are very useful additions to studying.

Does anyone use a certain set of purchased flash cards that they highly recommend?

Anyway, I wish everyone good luck with their studying.

    Hi Everyone,

I definitely need a study group! I will be retaking FAR in July. I am tired of not being successful at the exam and have certain shifted my attitude about the exam and have a whole new mindset. I am now on F9 and hoping to have a good solid 3 weeks of review and hammering the MCQs. Good luck to everyone taking FAR in Q3!

2014CPA, your FAR scores are very low. Are you doing practice exams before taking the actual? What are you getting on the cumulative exams? Are you using Becker? If you are, you hould take the final exmas before going to prometric.
