InactiveJust started my new job and after looking around at what everyone was wearing, I feel I need to step up my business casual attire! Does anyone recommend any good places to get work clothes that won’t break the bank?

InactiveI'm usually a pants sort of girl. Mainly because I hate wearing tights/nylons. Kohl's has great pants right now and they wash really well. They also have short/petite sizes which is great for me since I'm 5'1″. I invested in a pair of tall boots this weekend at DSW and intend to wear them with skirts going forward.
This week has been a sort of “makeover” week for me. As for hair, I was tired of dealing with my super curly long hair. So I got a pixie cut. Really easy for tax season, relatively trendy right now, looks neat and professional.

InactiveI didn't buy the sewing machine. It was my grandmothers. It's older than me, heavy, and slow but it never skips a stitch. My husband gave me a Serger for my birthday a few years ago and I love it. Sewing is a lot like accounting if you think about it. Both are just puzzles waiting to be put together.

Membermy pants vs. skirt/dress routine is usually dependent on how tired I am in the mornings, haha! wake up feeling good and with enough time – skirt or dress with enough time to put together cute shoes/accessories. wake up feeling groggy after snoozing 3 times? pants and flats and a big sweater!! also if it's plain ole freezing outside, I usually can't bring myself to wear a skirt because it's too dang cold like Jennifer said.
I forgot to share this gem too: https://www.charmingcharlie.com/ Charming Charlie. TONssssssss of cheap jewelry. I've learned some is TOO cheap but most if just good affordable accessories! The store is like, color-coded too so it's easy to find stuff you want/need! If you ever see one of these stores, stop by!!
I want a sewing machine now!
This thread is great btw. I wonder if there are any guys secretly reading through it!!

MemberI have an Ann Taylor outlet nearby, and 90% of my clothes are from there. The 10% is from JC Penney.
I like Ann Taylor a lot – plus I have almost zero sense of style, and the people who work there have a lot of patience and put together a nice outfit. I've never come home, put something on and thought, “Geez, why did I let them talk me into this?”
Skirts – I have a couple. I tend to default to skirts when I'm too busy for laundry and all my pants have hit the rotation a couple of times.

ParticipantI love my sewing machine but am admittedly terrible at it! Ha! I've learned more about my sewing machine by breaking it or getting thread horribly tangled in the moving components and then having to fix it then I could have ever learned from the DVD it came with! When I'm attempting to get started and begin muttering profanity my husband will ask “are you threading the bobbin?” and bring over a glass of wine! 🙂 Hopefully FAR is in the book so I can improve on my sewing machine skills!
@Lilla what type of hair do you have? Curly? Straight? Wavy? I have long, thick, frizzy, wavy hair…which I blowdry and flatiron straight EVERY DAY. When it's summertime I get (please don't judge me) Keratin treatments every 6-8 weeks like clockwork so it's a piece of cake to blow it out. If you are trying to straighten wavy hair, find a quality salon and try a mini keratin. Yes, you are literally asking your stylist to comb high grade chemicals through your hair and then running a 450 degree flat iron through it. Yes, it's probably horrible to breath in all those fumes. But I really don't care. I'm that vain. 😉 If your hair is curly and you like it that way, invest in a quality blow dryer and diffuser. Blot, do not rub, your hair straight out of the shower and put in a ton of gel/mouse/scrunch product and DO NOT TOUCH IT ANYMORE. Put on the diffuser and gently blow dry your hair upside down. Touch up any sad looking sections with a curling iron and you'll be set!
Skirts: Almost never. I struggle to find a pencil skirt that doesn't look too slutty or too old lady…you know what I mean! I have a few dresses that are work appropriate but I won't wear them to work unless it's winter so I can wear dark tights with them. I spent my entire summer on study lockdown and I'm Casper the ghost white! I've had to get spray tans (again, please don't judge me) before every vacation this summer just so people on the beach don't make annoying comments about how white I am.
Shoes: Confession…I'm a shoe whore. The more expensive the better and it's almost an adrenaline rush when I'm shopping for them. The shoe man at Nordstrom knows me by first name. I love a good bargain on apparel but I lose my mind when it comes to heels! I'm obsessed with Joan and David, Kate Spade, Michael Kors,Tory Burch and when I pass the exam I fully intend on purchasing myself a pair of Louboutins. I have certain pairs of shoes that I've dropped crazy money on that I refuse to wear outside. I will wear normal shoes to work, bring the good ones in my purse to work, change into them at my desk, and only wear them to work on carpet or tile…no exceptions. If the weather is good aka no rain, sleet, snow, not too cold, I'll wear them to dinner but I make my husband drop me off at the door or valet so I don't have to scuff them in the parking lot. They are just too beautiful to get dirty…like art for the feet! My husband thinks I'm insane…can't argue on that one! 😉
Let's talk about handbags too! What are you ladies carrying this fall/winter?

MemberMints, I hear ya on the skirts either being too skanky (short) or grandma-like! (just not cute). I am really picky about my skirts!
Alright, handbags, here we go! I'm on a low level of obsession. I'm not sure what keeps me in check – probably the fact that I can't reasonably spend hundreds of dollars on a purse without feeling ashamed and now that I have a husband, he also lays down the law (“Why do you even need more than one?” ……… do you even PURSE BRO???). But sometimes I can't stop. My favorite place to go is the closest outlet mall which has Kate Spade, Michael Kors, Coach stores (also a Pottery Barn, Williams Sonoma, White House Black Market…… I'm in love, *SIGH*). I bought my bridesmaids Kate bags for their bridesmaids gifts there and I am ashamed to say I was sad when I left the store without having bought anything for myself (apon returning from the honeymoon, I went back and did get one). The naughtiest I ever behaved was when I went to the MK store at the mall and straight-up bought myself a full-priced bag. It was a reward for being promoted to senior staff back in 2011 at my old firm. It's still my favorite purse (the white one in the picture), so versatile!
Here is a pictorial of a sample of my current selection!
The red/navy stripe MK was fun in the summer, but sort of going out of season. The black & white & red Kate is great for the winter holidays!
