Just started my new job and after looking around at what everyone was wearing, I feel I need to step up my business casual attire! Does anyone recommend any good places to get work clothes that won’t break the bank?

@jennifer241 I go to the Nine West outlet. For online shopping I shop on Zappos for shoes, they have decent reviews to indicate if the shoes will be comfortable plus free shipping and returns.

Zappos is shoe paradise.:) Free shipping. Free returns. And 48 hour delivery. Can't beat it. 🙂

I updated my entire wardrobe this weekend. Kohls, JC Penney, H&M and Target are the winners. Kohl's sends good coupons in the mail. Keep in mind that you could wear a less dressy basic cotton top and pair it with a blazer/nice cardigan and a scarf or big statement necklace and it looks more dressy. Scarves are my friend, they dress up anything.

@jennifer241 For shoes try DSW or zappos. We have a DSW locally and they mail pretty generous coupons every so often. My two most comfortable pairs are Lifestride and Naturalizer. I don't remember how much they were, probably under $50. I tend to buy ones that are patent leather looking because they look dressier without trying.

I'd say 80% of my work clothes are from The Limited! They have a handful of size Long pant types which work good for me since I'm 5'10”. Also their ‘Exact Stretch' pants are always good! I have their credit card and they are always sending me little perks/coupons in the mail.

The only other thing I SWEAR by and tell all ladies about is the brand “comfort plus” from Payless shoes. They are the MOSt comfortable pumps I've ever bought/worn/had. I have, like, 5 pairs of pumps from them and I wear them to work all the time!

    https://payless.com/store/product/detail.jsp?catId=cat10088&subCatId=cat440048&skuId=128628120&productId=70962&lotId=128628&category=&catdisplayName=Womens (just one example)

    REG - 65, 70, 80!
    BEC - 35, 62, 79!
    AUD - 73, 75!
    FAR - 65, 73, 70, 75! DONE.

Also, don't forget about the rest of your appearance – hair, nails, accessories! It can make even mediocre clothes look polished, professional, and cute.

Find a good hair stylist – it doesn't have to break the bank. Once you find someone who does a great job, they can really help you understand how to style your hair quickly and professionally – while still being you. Get your hair taken care of regularly (every 2-4 months depending on style). I've also found that just taking regular care of my nails at home, with a couple of well-rated products (glass file, Nail Tek II Foundation and Intensive Therapy!), made them look like I walked out of a salon. Get a nice watch, earrings, other jewelry, etc.

It's the whole package that will make you seem “stepped up”. Good luck!

@CareBear The hair, nails, and accessories is where my whole appearance falls apart. 😐 I know it is, but I can't figure out how to fix that! I've been to several stylists in the area and haven't found any that actually can help me understand my hair – they all just seem to want to get the haircut over and get paid. Honestly for the past year or so I've cut my own hair because I got tired of paying someone to do something that didn't help me at all after I walked out of the salon. 😐 All the stylists I've gone to have come highly recommended, and all of them didn't tell me anything to help.

Does anyone have good resources or tips to learn to style your hair “right” on your own, for those of us who can't find good stylists?

Oh, and since we're talking clothes, I'm curious how often all the ladies here wear skirts, dresses, or pants for work. Right now, I wear pants all the time, but I'd like to find some cute, versatile skirts and/or dresses to vary my wardrobe a bit. 🙂 My greatest difficulty with skirts, though, is that I have yet to find a pair of heels that doesn't hurt my feet terribly, so I wear flats all the time, and flats don't do much to help skirts. 😐

This time of year is also a great time to shop since most stuff will be going on sale. I always buy stuff off season. End of summer is when I buy my summer stuff and same goes for winter. I always get nice looking winter coats that are normally over $100 for less than $50. J Crew Factory is another place I check for staples like pencil skirts and dress shirts. Don't buy their stuff online. The prices online are always more and the stores usually have more discounts. Target has also had some really good work clothes lately.

@Jennifer241 I get my everyday shoes from DSW. They have a pair of Ninewest shoes that I buy for $39.99 that goes with pants and skirts. I wear t hem pretty much everyday during the week and they last me at least a year and half before I have to replace them. They are very comfortable. The pair below is the pair I normally buy but I usually get it when the price goes down.

@Lilla For hair resources – I almost hate to recommend this, but for hair tips/styling you might try YouTube tutorials. I recommend it because years ago I learned how to put on eyeliner better fom a teenager who was a pro at makeup. 🙂 I try to wear skirts/dresses once or twice a week.

I'm awful when it comes to accessorizing. Anyone have any recommendations on where to find good deals for accessories? I already checked out/bookmarked jane.com (mentioned in a previous post).
