    Back from FAR,

    Thoughts:

Pretty much everything on the exam was covered in Becker. However I still feel like I had to rush to get through everything. First testlet was medium, second was much harder, and the 3rd was a bit harder than the first and easier than the second. I felt rushed the whole way. There were 3-4 problems in the second and third testlet where I just guessed b/c I had spent too much time already. They weren't problems I didn't know but they would have taken too long so I just guessed and moved on. First tabs in the first sim were tough and time consuming. I just guessed on one whole tab and sorta half-assed the others b/c I needed to get to the second sim. The written part was pretty easy and I found the research quickly. The second sim was kinda the opposite — easy tabs, my written communications was mediocre and I couldn't find the research.

The points I lose on this exam are b/c of the lack of time, not b/c I simply didn't know or forgot anything. I felt confident on the problems I put time and effort into. It really irritates me that they give 4.5 hours on audit and only 4 hours on this. The times should be switched in my opinion simply b/c there are so many calculations which can take more time on FAR.

Anyway, I feel about the same as I did coming out of REG as I do coming out of this and I got an 82 on REG so we'll see what happens. Gonna be pretty mad if I fail b/c this was my last one and I start work in September where a CPA bonus would await me if I end up passing this.

@Maddux, I'm glad to hear that you were tested on subjects covered by Becker/you felt prepared for by Becker; but I agree, it's a shame that you didn't have enough time to spend on the simulations/other MCQs.

I'm just finishing my second go-round with the MCQ's and my first go-round with the supplemental questions for all nine chapters. I took extensive notes the first time through the book, and took a few more notes as I went back and reviewed the second time, because, to be honest, I had forgotten a good bit in just a few weeks. My scores the second time through weren't what I'd like them to be, so I think I'm going to focus on going through all of my “marked” questions over the weekend. I haven't looked at any of the simulations yet, and I'm not sure where I'll squeeze that in as of now.

With so much information, I'm not entirely sure how I want to go about reviewing for the third time, i.e. not sure what to concentrate on, whether I should re-work the MCQs, read more of the theory, work the simulations, etc. I want to be finished with my review by the 27th, so I can use the Becker's “Final Review” product from then on to the 31st.

I agree with you DocHalladay, am just starting off with chapter 5, but I just went through chapter 2 and 3 progress test MCQ'S and am also not getting the scores I would consider good. Its so much info that one is bound to forget once you start a new chapter. Oh well as everybody says repetition is the key to doing this well. Hopefully I can retain 75% to pass this exam.

The scoring isn't based off of any raw percentage like that. Just go back and review chapters as you go. And practice, practice, practice…

I have been studying using Roger and Wiley. I have gone through all of the lectures and viewed the lectures on Government and Non-Profit a second time. I did all of the questions in the workbook. Created a separate worksheet with all of the Roger MCQ questions that I got wrong and the Simulations that I don't do so well on. Will go back and retake all of those questions I missed.

Now I am going to do a whole bunch of MCQ's in Wiley. The level of difficulty in Wiley seems to be comparable to what we might expect to see on the CPA exam. Due to the qualitative nature of other CPA parts, it was possible to make educated guesses on some of the questions I wasn't sure about. Don't feel the same way about FAR because of all of the calculations and journal entries.

I feel like I have to really study the journal entries and memorize them in order to do well. That is a pain. That is what makes this part so difficult. I like the idea of making FAR 4 1/2 hours and AUD 4 hours

Hope to be ready to take the exam at the end of next week. I don't know if I will be ready but will take next week off to try to get there. Haven't scheduled yet. Waiting till I fell better prepared. We'll see how it goes!!

    Good luck Everyone!!

    CPA Boston,

I'm using Roger also, and taking the exam on 8/23….I went thru the Wiley MC's once already and almost done(hopefully this weekend with a second round), I used wiley only on all my other sections, and let me tell you, this section is so large and slow that I lost many concepts that after watching the videos were very clear to me. I'm used to wiley and I keep going back to the chapters in there to cover things roger do not cover in the videos…Do you do that too?

    @CharlesD

Yes I did that for 2 or 3 topics that I was having difficulty with- Pensions and Deferred Taxes. Which sections in Wiley did you focus on?

I like Wiley MCQ's in study mode because it helps to reinforce what I learned from the lectures and also to learn concepts that Roger didn't emphasize. I am going thru all 1277 questions and then I will start taking simulated tests. I don't do any simulations in Wiley – all MCQ's. I plan to review all of the simulations in Roger's workbook one or two more times.

Once I start consistently scoring in the mid 80's on Wiley MCQ exam tests, I will begin to get comfortable. I liked Roger's section on Government Accounting. I didn't have this course in college so this was my first exposure. He did a good job of presenting the material.

Are you going thru all 1277 Wiley queestions??

    CPA Boston,

Yes, I do all Wiley's MC's; I don't do sims though, at all. I read the comunications questions and solution and the sims questions and answers….I haven't seen any questions on the exams on unfamiliar topics, that gives me assurance that Wiley touches almost all topics that you can be tested on….My focus are on Gov, NOP, Deferred tax, Inventories, Bonds, Leases, PPE, Consolidations, Pensions, EPS, and the main concepts in everything else. I try to do my best…this section is huge, so there are gonna be areas that I am going to be weaker on.

Finished with all the lectures and hw. Going into review mode. I hated Chapter 9 in Becker. However, I am so glad I will never have to listen to Tim Gearty ever ever again.

I took FAR on July 26th… before I took it, I watched most of Roger's review course (except for the topics I was already confident in) and then did ALL 1200+ questions on the wiley disc at least once (but probably about half of them I did twice). I also reviewed all of the simulations I could find. I only started studying about 3 weeks before my exam, so I really had to cram it all in my brain quickly. I feel pretty good, like I probably passed, but I have felt that way before and failed. So I don't want to get my hopes up. I have a lot riding on passing… if I didn't pass it, I will lose my BEC pass.

The test itself seemed about as hard as I expected it to… there were no topics that were surprising to me, but the time management was really difficult. Those 4 hrs just fly by. Both of my written questions were topics I was familiar with and I know I wrote killer responses to both. There was one part of one sim that I flat out guessed on, only because I didn't have enough time to do the actual calculations. I also skioped one of the research questions because it almost seemed like there was a technical flaw in the software… it wouldn't let me select the correct paragraph even though I'm sure it was the right answer (even looked it up when I got home).

So now I sit and wait… this is my last section, so I don't have anything else to focus my attention on during the awful process of waiting for score releases. Ugh. It's awful to hope that you're done, but realize that you may not be!

I feel awful about FAR!! I just took it on Thursday and still feel a bit shell-shocked. My first testlet was relatively easy, second hard and third hard. Unfortunately for me, my third testlet was organized as such that the “easier” of the hard questions were in the beginning and the second half was brutal. So I actually really struggled with time once I hit that second half and the simulations, something that NEVER happened to me on my prior 3 exams, since I'm usually pretty good with timing myself. I had about an hour and 25 minutes for the sims-which each had about 6 tabs that took forever since they were mostly long calculations and unrelated. I ended up guessing a lot and filling out stuff really quickly right before the timer went to 0! I'm still trying to recover from the fact that I was not able to finish the exam properly. It's the only exam that the timer had the chance to count down seconds 🙁 I would estimate that at least 75% of what I filled out for the sims was incorrect (excluding the written part and research which I know I did well on).

So it's actually rather funny- in a way I feel better about the multiple choice (just because I know it definitely kept getting harder) than the sims…usually it's the opposite with me. But I know that I still got tons wrong on the m.c. so I'm really nervous! At least my written communications were easy.

jenben- this is also my last exam (hopefully!) so I don't either have anything else to focus on. While frustrating, it is definitely better than studying for another section. With one of my prior tests, I didn't get my score back till the day before my next exam and having to check nasba and my state board so frequently was sooo distracting.

Oh, I really feel for you bakagal! The exact same thing happened to me when I took REG. I thought I was so well prepared and out of nowhere one of the sims was on a topic I had never even heard of. I ended up spending so much time on it that I didn't have time to even finish the 2nd sim. I was so distraught and inconsolable for days, and in the end I ended up passing with a 75! So I am hoping it will be a similar thing for you and that you will pass too! Regarding FAR though, I think it's insane how little time they allow. It covers such a broad amount of info, much of it with complex calculations, and 4 hrs just isn't enough time!

I took FAR yesterday. I went in confident and left feeling like there is no way I passed it. My first set of MCQ were medium, second set about medium and third set were about the same. I've passed Audit and REG and never noticed my MCQ getting harder. Most of the stuff I wasn't confident about were knocked out in the first 10-15 questions, so that was a reflief. And then came the simulations. WOW! By the time I finished those, I gave myself ZERO chance of passing. One of the communications, I might as well not have written anything, because I didn't know anything about the subject. The other communication, I found very easy. The research, 1 for 2 is my guess. As for the working tabs, some of the easier topics made hard. I know I can't talk about the specifics, but let's just say, I think the AICPA knew what I was weak on when it came to the tabs. Oh well, taking a few days off and then hitting BEC back up for my 2nd try. Maybe I will put in more than 10 hours this time!

well benjamincarm its a waiting game at this point you never know until you get the results. Currently am in the middle of chapter 5 MCQ's. Woke up this morning and was trying to remember what I went through yesterday. Some of the material stuck while the rest didn't. Am going at it again today. At this point am so worried about FAR, but what the heck!!! am already in doing it. What study material did you use? Am using Becker and hoping to see what I studied on the exam day.

hey all. finally got through the rest of pensions and did leases yesterday. hopefully now the modules will go by quicker (with Yaeger) because there is less time allocated among all the topics. ugh. this stuff sucks already. i actually don't find the information to be extremely difficult…it's just sooo much to remember. i honestly don't remember anything about goodwill impairment, etc. haha. i struggled to death with BEC because i just did not understand the information (until Yaeger homestudy), so i do feel a little more confident with FAR. i sat for FAR in april 2009 with NO studying and got a 64. so i am hoping i can pull off another 11 points being prepared this time.

i am halfway through the modules and really want to be done by next weekend so i have a solid 2 weeks to review all the material. i cannot WAIT until aug 31 is over. at least then i can chill out for a few weeks. i am also waiting on my BEC score, which feels like it is taking forever to be released. probably because when i do find out i will only have a few weeks until i sit for FAR. 🙁

jeff i definitely did not hit the 25 hours of studying this week. i have today and tomorrow left in this week and i probably will be around 15 hours. i am sucking this week.

    AUD - 84; REG - 90; BEC - 79; FAR - 75; ALL DONE!!
