I am currently in my first of two final reviews. I have this week to get ready for a mock exam for a masters class so I am doing as many questions as I can without really going back and reading much, I finished all the lectures and MC on Sunday so I am just getting as much done as possible before this mock that will determine my class grade. Then I have two weeks of real final review which will involve rereading all the chapters, besides maybe 1,2, and 3 because I pretty much have those down, and then doing ALL the MC except maybe not all the supplemental. I am a little panicky because my husband and I are moving this weekend and I have a BEC mock to study for as well, I have already passed the real thing though, just a class formality…I hope studying goes well for you! Just keep in mind you might not do as well as you are used to on the problems the first time through, I know I didnt, but the second time things should really come together. Good luck! Atleast you are getting this beast out of the way, I dont know why my masters program has us save this for last!

Participanthey cpaboston!! i just finished dvd 2 of Yaeger so i am not there yet (dollar value lifo). sounds pretty gross though haha. do you sit for FAR aug 31? do you normally test in boston or is there a testing center closer to you?
anagha – i used Becker for REG and it may sound funny because i know my score is really good…but i walked out of that testing center thinking i BOMBED. my testlets must have been getting harder because i remember my MCQs being ridiculously hard. even my sims were insane. i knew i nailed one of the written communications and that must have been the one they graded! i also think i did well on the research tabs, too. if you are using becker, focus in on chapter 3 i believe. (corporate tax). i got a LOT of calculations…and not so much stuff on business law, but obviously all exams are different.
magic 8 ball – i used Becker for AUD and REG but after 2 unsuccessful attempts at BEC with Becker, i switched to Yaeger. i have had the last few weeks off from work, which has been pretty sweet because i have been going to my university library where i graduated from and have been studying. it is a freakin ghost town in the library so i am all by myself. it gets pretty lonely! i was there for 6 hours today but was able to get through DVD 2. that is nice of you that you are taking care of your gram!
another long day at the library tomorrow…i am glad i have the opportunity to study but it makes for a long day
AUD - 84; REG - 90; BEC - 79; FAR - 75; ALL DONE!!

ParticipantAnyone actually tried to get Becker to extend their time with the “Becker Promise”? Were you successful? I have had my materials for the last 6 months and have taken of the exams, 2 of them unsuccessfully… I am so close to passing point wise, (73, 72, unknown) that I know I will be taking those 2 again… Is it difficult to get the extension?
Hopeful this time around.... Back after a 2 year break!!
BEC - Feb 2013 78!!
FAR - May 2013 76!!
REG - 70! 71! 80!!
AUD - Oct 2013 79!!FINALLY DONE!!

InactiveMPoni – sounds like you made some great progress today. I'm moving slowly and getting worried. I will have to do a couple of major study days coming up.
No studying today. I left work early because my dad was admitted to the hospital with pneumonia. I've been worried about him this week and had to sneak to call the dr. to make him get checked out. He was so mad at me, then calmed down and admitted that he really didn't feel well. I spent the whole evening with him and good thing I did, because they missed bringing him his supper until I asked for it! So hopefully by tomorrow he will perk up and I can get back to some studying.

ParticipantI am not motivated to study, but I keep going trying to do at least an hour or two every day. I think that I am getting burned out, but I have only 5 more weeks to go.
The MCQ are taking like 5 minutes each to answer and that is putting a damper in my progress. The questions are not hard but they are so long.
When I first start studying in Mar'10 I used to do about 4 to 5 hours per day now I am lucky to do 2 hours everyday.

ParticipantWendy I have heard of people getting an extension with Becker – I think you have to prove when your exam is and it has to be relatively close to when your software expired. You just have to call them and see what they need from you.
connieCPA – i am so sorry to hear about your father! 🙁 i hope he has a speedy recovery. maybe if you are there visiting him you could bring your laptop and study for a little while!
i feel you NYmadman…i am running out of steam. only 5 weeks left. i am hoping i passed BEC this time around, but i want to enjoy my weeks off from work, enjoy the summer, just enjoy life! i am ready to do that. i am sure we all are. i think i can see the light at the end of the tunnel. the light will be even brighter if i passed BEC!
AUD - 84; REG - 90; BEC - 79; FAR - 75; ALL DONE!!

ParticipantJust finished chapter 3. And went ahead and did the progress tests in the Becker software for chapters 1,2, and 3. The scores are so frustrating 63, 63 and 54. Thought I had these nailed to the tee..Guess I was wrong. How do folks pass this particular exam????

ParticipantI am taking FAR for the second time (73 the first time) in a few weeks. I do well on every chapter except chapter 2, and my detailed score results reflected this as well. The chapter does not seem that difficult compared to the others but for some reason I just cannot get above 60 on the questions. Any advice? Is there another review book I should look at for this chapter? Does anyone have any suggestions??

InactiveI completely do not understand business combinations/consolidations…I don't think Yaeger does a very good job on this chapter.
I really don't have time to go back and read it….hopefully this chapter will be lightly brushed on my exam.

I am not sure about Yeager but Becker also does a terrible job explaining consolidations, the only reason I am fine with that topic is because I just took an advance accounting class and that was about 40% of the topics we covered. If you need any help or explanations I would be happy to help you and explain things in a hopefully better way! Let me know! I am actually praying for a simulation on consolidations, I had to do elimination worksheets a million times for my class. Just let me know!

InactiveWell, unfortunately I just don't get it all.
What about the acquisition method…most of my questions deal w/this…could you briefly explain this??
The book gives a formula of:
FV of consideration trans. (cost)
+FV of previously held equity interest in acquiree
+FV of noncontrolling interest
= Total acquisition price
– FV of net identifiable assets
=Goodwill/Bargain Purchase
..However, half the questions about acquisition method didn't seem like it gave me enough info.
It may be a lost cause….and I appreciate you trying to help

Participantcpa valenz
You don't have to use every part of that equation…only use the info given. If there is no non controlling interest, then you don't worry about that, and so forth. Only use the info given in the problem. Most of the problems only deal with FV of consideration trans. (cost) and FV of net identifiable assets.

InactiveThe best way I was taught was to take the FV of the ENTIRE company, which would be the FV of what you purchased + and FV of what you didnt(non-controlling interest), one way you might have to do this is if all they tell you is that you bought 80% of the company for $400,000, just divide the $ by the %, $400,000/.8=$500,000 the total FMV of the company. Then subtract the BV of the company, this may be given or you can look at the total Stockholders equity by either adding up CS, APIC and RE or subtracting assets from liabilities, lets say $300,000. Then the FV and BV difference is $200,000. Then you take the DIFFERENCE between the BV of assets and there FV. Lets say land BV=100,000 and FV=150,000. I think about it like this, OK so we spent $200,000 above the BV of the company but part of the reason we did this was because the land was worth $50,000 more than the BV. So you take $200,000-50,00=$150,000. There is no other reason that we spent $150,000 more for the company so all that goes to goodwill. This is the whole though process….what is the FV of the company?, whats the BV? Find the difference. Then think why is there a difference, why did we pay more for this company, maybe the assets are worth more than the BV..anything over that difference is all goodwill. Sorry that might have been really confusing, I was just trying to think of all the ways they could give you info and how to do it that way….that might have not helped much but try to use the thought process, i think that helps…

InactiveIt looks like the FV $500,000
BV 300,000
FV-BV Difference 200,000
asset FV differences50,000
GOODWILL 150,000
