jstayParticipantHow do progress tests work with becker? after F2 there was one, i didn't do it yet. then when i started F3 i noticed another progress test. If I had done it after F2, would I be getting the same questions in the progress test for F3? You can also adjust to how many questions you want, how does that work? will i see those questions later too?

MaeParticipantSo I am finally checking in. I am taking my first exam July 5th and, while I'm trying the best I can, I still feel like there is an overwhelming amount of information to learn. I figured I would take FAR first because that's where my current job is most heavy in.
Being my first exam, I'm not sure what to expect in terms of experience and retaining material. This will be an adventure, for sure.

AnonymousInactive@jstay progress tests are basically all the hw and optional questions in random order for each chapter. So starting f2 you will hv to the option of choosing a progress test for the chapters you hv covered thus far and you can choose the number of MCQs. The max you can do is going to be the total MCQs in all the chapters you hv covered. for e.g. if you r finishing up F3 and want to take a progress test for F1-F3 the max MCQs you can do will be 616. You hv the option to choose any one of those 3 chapters as well. The 616 include all hw questions from all three chapters.

LStevens225ParticipantI am so proud of myself! I actually studied from Saturday to Thursday! Every day! I am still working on getting up early enough to study but I've been studying for a good hour and a half to two hour every night! Today is my day off from studying but I am back in the game tomorrow! Woot!

j.fordMemberAlright Q3 time to get even more focused…. Took FAR in Q4 of 2013 not good… took it again begining of Q2 and increased by 10 pts thanks to the blitz… lets hope 3rd times the charm. I am using CPA excel, Black CPA audio, and NINJA Blitz. Game plan is to take it on July 7th. For those who are looking to take this for the first time, key areas to keep your focus on is Governmental, IFRS, and SIMS(most of us have a decent understanding of GAAP and the general guidelines). I know the SIMS will take a long time to get through but from my experience if you understand the SIMS you'll do better on the MC's.
My studying consists of listening to the audio a lot… I work full time and have an hour commute each way. Studying is limited as I work full time, have a part time job, volunteer as treasurer of my church, married and have an almost 2 year old daughter.
For me its hard to get focused. I am trying to take advantage of what time I do have to study. Usually a couple hours every night after my wife and daughter go to bed and then the weekends.
Everyone learns differently, the key is finding what works for you. Repetition is definitely key with FAR since there is a lot of information to get through.
Getting involved on here has helped as well since most of us have different strong areas and are willing to help out. Post any questions and there will be someone who is willing to explain how they got to the answer. Q2 thread had a lot of people posting and responding which gives different perspectives based on the study material they are using or their back-ground.
Keep a positive attitude and avoid getting discouraged. Failure comes from giving up and not trying. The CPA exam isn't easy but I work with a lot of CPA's in my current position and it is obtainable. Good luck to everyone and lets hope Q3 group all pass!!

AnonymousInactiveI just started re-writing all my notes and I notice that I have about 100 pages of notes from F1-F10 including journal entries, mnemonics, formulas and key terms. In general how long should the re-writing technique should last? I have my exam scheduled for July 3rd so after this I plan to switch to the NINJA MCQ where I see a different set of MCQ, Simulations and a couple of practice exams that will further enhance my knowledge prior to my July 3rd meeting with FAR.
@J.ford best wishes to you as well with your studies we all will make it to the top 🙂

MamabearMember@DW–the amount of time it takes to get through the rewriting is different from person to person. I could only rewrite about 10 pages a day because my hand would start cramping. I have seen some people post that they rewrote 30 pages a day. My suggestion is to rewrite one section then take a quiz on that section, then rewrite the next section and take a quiz on the next section, and so on. Take your quizzes without looking at your notes. This allows you to see how well you actually retained the material during the rewrite.

nicole2035Member@alexpeters you need a good in between. My notes are for talking myself through things i don't understand, and it may take me more explanation than other so my notes can get lengthy. so i've been typing my notes. i spend no more than 2 hours reading and taking notes. then i cut myself off, and do MC.
I think i'm gonna skip derivatives, my level for ‘give a damn' towards this is really low with this headache i have. i'm skipping to cash flows, and governmental accounting etc. i'll come back around to derivatives

AnonymousInactive@Mamabear that is a great suggestion and I plan to adopt this technique of yours as a way to build my learning. I used it for F1 (only chapter I finished re-writing all my notes) and got a 90% on a 30 question progress test. Immediately I see how re-writing the notes would help in my preparation for FAR. Thank you again, I plan to continue to use this method going forward to be fully prepared for exam day.

MamabearMember@DW–No problem! I think I need to take my own advice while studying for REG. I have been combing notes into Word and I don't know if it's helping. I may start rewriting and quizzing. I hate REG already and I've only been studying it for a little over a week.

ahugemistakeParticipantI have not scheduled my CPA exam yet since I am still waiting to finish the CPAexcel study material. I on specific transactions, and have NFP and GOV to go. I am a little worried about the review since I have been studying since February (dad of 2 kids who loves to procrastinate), however I am determined to take FAR this summer and PASS!
I will have the WTB to review the material, and I am wondering how much time I should give myself to review. I hope I will be done with the material by the end of June, should I review all of July and take the exam in the beginning of August?

MamabearMember@ahugemistake–Be careful with a full month for review. You may get burnt out before the test. I usually see people post about a good two weeks of review, but I guess it all depends on how you review. If you do MCQ all day every day for a month burn out will probably occur. But if you study your notes one day, quiz the next day on that material, and go chapter by chapter then you may be okay. It's just important that you get to all the topics close to the exam date, even if you are nailing those topics now, you still need to go back through them during the last couple of weeks before your test. Also, since your NTS is good for 6 months you may want to go ahead and get it. The seats for Q3 are going to start filling up quickly as soon as the scores come out next week.
