This is for people taking their exams in the January/February 2010 testing window.
Recommended prep time for FAR is 6-8 weeks @ 20 hours a week.

Just retook FAR this morning. I have no idea if I passed but I definitely feel better walking out of there than I did the last time I took it which resulted in a 69. Now for the waiting game.
KSGirl86, hang in there. You are so close but you just need to stay focused for 10 more days. What's ten more days compared to a lifetime of having CPA behind your name?
I have 1 month left in the window and I am debating whether or not to move on to BEC. Work will likely get hellish soon enough (tax busy season) and I am wondering if I could fit 20 hours a week in there on top of that. I am open to any suggestions/words of encouragement…

January 30, 2010 at 10:11 pm #222925AnonymousInactiveWill It Ever End: I am already in the heat of busy and have been for about 2 weeks now. I don't remember having this much work this early on in the past, but boy are we busy. I completed several tax returns yesterday and had several more on my desk this morning. I am rewatching all of Yaeger's lectures and am going insane. I seriously don't know if I even have the power to do this. I passed BEC in three weeks. It seemed to go pretty well…I got an 82 and took it in November. I have one part down and hopefully two in a week and a half. I am just so darn nervous and already have the worst test anxiety. Is the material very deep? Or do I just need to focus on the concepts that are taught in the lectures and work the assigned multiple choice quesitons? Will that be enough? I have really bad self doubt and have given myself ulcers over this stinking exam. You could definitely pass BEC in this window. Just think you could have it done and that's one more closer to passing this exam and putting it all behind you. I just feel so overwhelmed and incompetent almost. Any advice?
January 30, 2010 at 11:51 pm #222926Will_it_ever_endParticipantMy advice: take a day off. Plan on not looking at any material all day… maybe two. Don't feel guilty either. Sometimes when you get to this point it no good to try and push yourself.
FAR encompasses so many different topics that it pays to know a fair amount about everything. That being said, there are some things that you can concede on not learning. If it gives you a major headache it may not be worth the 1 question you'll get on the exam. You make the call. I spent the last week rereading the Becker book several times (not word for word). Didn't do any questions and just focused on the concepts themselves. Helped the big picture of things.
Hang in there.

January 31, 2010 at 12:04 am #222927AnonymousInactiveThanks! I sure am trying and I just keep telling myself…”You only have like 10 days and then you can relax until after tax season!” I do not have an option to fail in my opinion. I am kind of excited since Kansas University and Kansas State University go head-to-head tonight and also Miss America is on TLC and I am stoked (considering I have competed for Miss KS 3 times, lol). One thing people tell me about myself is that if I have my mind really set on something I will get it or achieve it. Well by golly my mind has been set on being a CPA since I discovered math lol! I love studying and I love tax season, but not at the same time. I just know I have to push through these next 10 days or so and then I can relax for a little bit (if you call tax season relaxing!) I am just stressing, so i have yaegers lectures on while I am cleaning house, doing laundry, etc and then I am like duh i knew that! I just get so nervous and anxious that I feel like I dont remember anything. If I just sit down and am not stressed or pushing myself and work mcqs it comes so easy. My anxiety is just absolutely awful!
January 31, 2010 at 12:21 am #222928AnonymousInactiveI am taking it soon too… and am in freak out mood as well. I'm trying to just take it topic by topic and not look at it in whole because that's too intimidating. When I start freaking out, I can't study. When I can't focus on studying, then I start to freak out about the thought of taking it again. It's a vicious cycle haha.
So I'm trying to take my own advice and just look at the test in smaller pieces.

That is so funny you said you love studying and tax season, but not at the same time. I have been doing taxes for 5 years now and this is the first time I've ever looked forward to it because I was so sick of studying FAR. I spent 2 1/2 months studying it and was so burnt out.
My advice is to not wear yourself out right before your exam. The study questions are harder than most of the real exam questions (at least that is what I thought but my score may reflect differently in 3 weeks). If you have time, look over some AICPA released questions. I know that helped me get an extra point or two.
Good luck!
January 31, 2010 at 5:09 pm #222931PursuitCPAParticipantIm confused,
My main study plan is through Yeager and Wiley. I also threw in Gleim this time. How come there are questions from both study programs with entirely different answers???

Hey everyone, I started studying for FAR on 1/25 (last week). It didn't start very smoothly and there have been some distractions, notably my Grandma passed away this past Friday, her funeral/wake are tomorrow. I am scheduled to take the exam 2/26. I am very nervous… I am worried I won't have enough time to study and prepare with just under 4 weeks left… Can you guys please give me some tips/advice on how to appraoch this when I hit the book again starting Wednesday? I am using Becker. I have not sat for the exam yet. I can commit 6-8 hours a day or 30/40 hours a week.
Thanks SO much in advance.

February 2, 2010 at 2:37 am #222934itsaccrualworldParticipantI took FAR today, I thought my first MC testlet was easy, but then they definately got harder, which is expected. The SIMs were fair for the most part although I thought one was very poorly assembled (it wasn't a difficult topic, but I wasn't sure what they were implying) Overall, it wasn't nearly as bad as REG where I walked out feeling like a moron. Hopefully thats a good sign for me.
To Glogo2384, I used Becker (and Wiley to a lesser extent) and I'd suggest studying backwards through Becker, because all the topics at the end are the difficult ones, the first half of the book is the material they've been pounding in our heads since Principles 2100. Everything in Becker was tested, but the hard questions all came from the later material.
Hopefully that advice doesn't overstep the sacred bounds of the AICPA
BEC 85 REG 94 FAR 95 AUD 80 "accountants do it with double entry"
February 2, 2010 at 4:44 am #222935hopefloatsParticipantI'm a newbie to this forum. I've been reading it on and off for a few weeks to help get me through my last few weeks of studying for FAR. I, too, took theFAR exam today and I'm still reeling almost 9 hours later. A little background – I've been doing hedge fund/private equity accounting for 7 years and I am up for a Director position this summer (currently a manager in a small – 50 employee – private investment advisor firm). I think passing the CPA exam would give me an extra leg up on that position. While I feel like my actual work experience is great, FAR encompasses so much more than anything I have ever done in accounting. That said, I studied a lot. I put aside my entire life for the past 6-7 weeks and took every spare minute to study. I really felt like I had the Becker book down.
My test experience today – I breezed through the first section. I literally thought – wow, I studied way too much. 2nd testlet was definitely more tough. 3rd was even harder! I literally felt like I was guessing on half of the questions in the 3rd testlet. Frustrating! I agree that the sims were fair; much better than REG. It's hard to walk out of a test feeling like you've put so much time in and only feel confident with 3 out of 5 of the testlets.
The only other exam I've taken is REG and I came out of that feeling like I got a 50%, and ended up with an 88; so, keeping my fingers crossed. It's just so hard to gauge what you're answering correctly when you're making ‘educated guesses'. Hoping all the studying has paid off… I guess there's nothing to do except wait…
February 3, 2010 at 2:06 pm #222936jsellsParticipantI have been using Gleim to prepare for FAR. I have 2009 Yeager cram. Should I use the cram or just keep going with my primary review material? If I use the cram how close to the test should I use it?
FAR 73 02/09 ??? 02/10 AUD 68 04/09 80 11/09 BEC 72 04/09 78 10/09 REG 80 05/09
February 3, 2010 at 2:18 pm #222937PursuitCPAParticipantif you have time prepare with Gleim. Use Yeager and Wiley only. Gleim has some odd answers.
Taking it tomorrow God Help me.

Far is going to be the death of me!! I'm using Becker… the test is on the 26th and I've got 3 chapters left to get through before I can start reviewing.
