Just took FAR today. I didn't think the MC were too terrible, but the SIMS were brutal. Way harder than the SIMS on AUD or REG that I took this year. How did everyone else feel?

My Sims were awful. I didn't have time to finish, wasn't sure how to do some of them, and was scared I had failed. My friends also felt theirs were quite difficult, so it looks like many people feel the Sims were much harder than expected.

Yeah, my SIMS were crazy for FAR. They were nothing like the practice SIMS in Wiley or the ones they showed me on the AICPA website. I hope I did enough to pull it out. I did answer all 7 so I'm hoping to receive partial credit on them 🙂

I need help with the research tab on the exam. I was trying to find “factoring receivables” first I went to the codification, and then assets, and then receivables and entered “factoring receivables” and I was taken to a page with 176 different responses?

I need those points and am sitting in Aug. can some one please explain how to navigate this site? I will be forever indebted to you!

In the codification online, you have to use the “advanced search” function. There will be a drop down menu that lets you select Assets>receivables, then when you use “factoring” as the keyword, and the search, it'll only search for the keyword within receivables.

On the actual exam, navigate Assets>Receivables, then use the “search within” function. It'll be a radio button next to the keyword field.

    Good Luck!

Just took FAR for the first time (first exam, period). Felt really good about my performance on the MC but apparently took way too long and didn't save enough time for sims. I think I did well on three of the sims, so-so on the 4th, realized how little time I had left and had to rush through the 5th and 6th (only finishing about 50-75% of each) and didn't get to attempt the final one at all.

On the bright side, I feel like I knew the material that was tested, even with the sims. I just didn't do a very good job with my pacing so I didn't leave myself enough time to work through the longer sims 🙁

Oh well, I know what to work on since I will probably have to retake it.

I took FAR yesterday and was thoroughly disgusted. My background is as follows. 97 on Audit, 80 on BEC, passed CIA exam, passed CFE. For additional information, I have never scored below a 100 on any collegiate level accounting course exam of any kind. Financial accounting is my strong point, and I find myself a MASTER at journal entries. I recently completed my masters in accounting degree and plan to pursue a PHD in a few year's time.

That being said, in addition, I utilized 2011 materials for Becker, Becker Final Review, Gleim, and Wiley, fully completing each individual review course. I took 4 full-length practice exams multiple times, did all the questions in each review course multiple times, and compiled a notebook of why I missed certain questions, and why I got certain other questions correct.

I did this for other two exam parts I have sat for (BEC and Audit) and felt even more confident for this test going in. I studied right under 500 hours at a 60 hour per week rate. My notebook is completely organized by topic and by question style, ended up being 125 pages front and back (225 pages total)and I reviewed my notes 5 times in the days leading up to my exam.

All of that being said, my particular test was an absolute nightmare. I found myself guessing on SEVERAL questions which to my estimation were almost nonsense. I don't want to mention specifics, due to the confidentiality agreement of the test. I don't feel this does though.

Of the 25 separate discrete topic areas I identified in making my notes, 8 of them were tested in some fashion on my test. Of those eight areas, on two of them I received one question each. Those questions were NONSENSE and did not test my level of understanding of that area in any way.

5 of my seven sims were on the same topic area, which was also highly pervasive throughout the remainder of my test. The vast majority of what Becker said was heavily tested? Not on my exam. The “minutiae” as Peter put it? On my exam.

I will end this post with this. Four of my classmates took the exam recently as well. After hearing of my frustration after the exam, they were shocked. They felt the exam was very tough, but fair. I felt the exact opposite. Their sims were all on relevant but tough topics you expect to see on FAR. Mine were, for lack of a better word, again, NONSENSE.

If I end up failing, (which I expect), I am going to spread the word of the “unpassable test” certain individuals receive. For a “Uniform” exam, this is highly upsetting and entirely unacceptable. I never dreamed I would feel like this.

@folgersnyourcup – Many of us have the same opinion about REG as you do about FAR. Maybe you'll make up for your unpleasant FAR experience by being one of the few who think REG is tough but fair.

@gottagetmycpa – As long as you're well prepared and manage your time so that you have sufficient time for the SIMS, you'll probably do fine.

    FAR 4/1/11 - 89
    AUD 4/15/11 - 85
    REG 4/29/11 - 80
    BEC 5/13/11 - 85

    @folgers,

First of all, I'm glad you did so well in school, but studying for the CPA exam is nothing like studying for a collegiate exam. In collegiate exams, the topics on the exam generally cover much less material and require much less study time.

Second of all, studying for 60 hours a week for 8 weeks, you probably psyched yourself out. I'm sure you did much better than you actually think, especially if you completed the exam. Gonna be a long wait til September if you keep this feeling up.

    Erin,

What makes this ultimately upsetting is that I know how to study for the CPA exam, not just college. See my prior exam scores at the top of my post. I know what it takes to properly prepare, and the 60 hour weeks (on top of work) are how I prepared for the last two parts I sat for and passed. I honestly felt I could have done just as well on my exam had I shown up having skimmed the textbook once and worked no MC questions! There was that little of what I actually studied on there!!!

Oh well, I'm taking my anger out on REG now. I sit for on August 31st. I started watching the lectures on Saturday and am about to begin R4. I know this stuff cold but am making sure to take the time necessary to really understand it, as I did with my previous parts as well.

    Good luck to everyone!

I am restudying for FAR (which I took back in Feb.) and I am not sure how to go about it. Should I redo everything? I was thinking about not listening to ALL of the lectures, just the sections I have difficulty in. I find that I zone out a lot during the lectures and dont get as much from them as I would reading through my highlights and notes on my own. I am using Becker and this time around I got the NINJA notes. Any suggestions on how to nail FAR this time around?

    Happen:

DON'T redo everything! I'll share what I did, and hopefully it'll help you out. I wrote out each topic covered by my study course (I used Yaeger, by the way, after first going with Becker). Seeing each topic on one piece of paper made it easy to go down the list and see which areas I'm weaker in. I concentrated on those areas most. The biggest mistake I've made in studying for a retake on a section is covering everything all over again. I wasted lots of precious time; you'll know which areas you're good at as you answer most questions on that topic correctly. Move past that and hit your weaker areas.

    BEC: pass
    REG: pass
    AUD: pass
    FAR: pass
