I’ve had a few requests for April/May Study Groups…March will be here before you know it.

In order to take an early April exam, you should begin studying…now. 🙂

for 19,000 bed frames, it should have took you 1,900 direct labor hours, which equates to an overhead of $3,800. It actually took you 2,100 direct labor hours for those 19,000 bed frames, which equates to an overhead of $4,200.

For efficiency variances, use actual time spent spent * standard rate and the time you was supposed to spend * standard rate.

You need the 19,000 bed frames to figure out how many direct labor hours that should have taken. It says .10, so thats how we get that it should have taken 1,900 direct labor hours.

Thanks NYC..i think i got it now. Becker uses the mnemonic A BA BSA. Where BS = Budgeted x Standard rate. This is where my confusion was with this problem. I thought you would need to use the budget units for this part of the variance. But it make sense that your comparing what actually occurred to what should have been spent on overhead.

Wiley question: page 299 says predetermined variable OH is calculated using ‘actual' activity level – how do you have estimated ‘actual' activity level? if you're using ‘actual' numbers, then it's not an estimated number, right? i'm confused by the wording.

I think you divide the estimated cost by estimated labor hours to get Overhead rate. You then multiply this over head rate * the actual labor hours to get the predetermined overhead, which is basically the applied overhead.

@mratner–those are very good scores! I definitely recommend reviewing the answers you got wrong and taking the Becker Final Exam #2. With scores like that, I expect you to get at least a 90 on the actual exam 🙂

Good job Ratner. I Took the final testlets in the back of the Wiley book and average 83%. I'm not sure how this compares to the becker final exams. Either I'm screwed or i'm in good shape. I've heard the final exams are much harder than the real exam, but I've heard nothing of the questions in the very back of the Wiley book.

Price variances and efficiency variances can be key to the performance measurement within a company. In evaluating the performance within a company, a material efficiency variance can be caused by all of the following, except the:

    a. Design of the product.

    b. Skill level of the labor force.

    c. Sales volume of the product.

    d. Actions of the Purchasing Department.

The answer is C. But how does the actions of the purchasing dept affect the material efficiency? The variance is AQ x SP vs SQ x SP. Maybe if they bought faulty materials?
