Taking AICPA under states with fewer prerequisites

    Hi,

I am starting my MS in Accountancy in New York this fall. I majored in something completely different during my undergrad, so I do not have enough credits to sit for AICPA exam under New York jurisdiction where it asks you to have 150 credits.

My question is, can I take the exam under Maine jurisdiction in New York, (as Maine only asks for 15 accounting credits), and then transfer my scores from the board of Maine to New York after I pass?

I can sit for the exam under Maine jurisdiction even now. (Took some online classes to be eligible)

I thought it would be nice to pass the exam before graduation, because I will be eligible to sit for the exam under New York jurisdiction only after I graduate. Is this a common thing to do? Or will it entail future troubles? I intend to practice in New York.

I hope my question makes sense. Thank you all in advance!

I think you are allowed to sit in NY if you have 120 credits, on your way to 150 credits?
    I could be wrong.
I hope you are also aware you don't need a masters in accounting to be licensed in NY.
    Just the 150 credits.

I *believe* you can begin taking them under Maine and then transfer them to NY once you are fully eligible.
You might also be able to be licensed in Maine, and then request reciprocity with NY, but I am not sure how deep they go on education checks with a recip license. Just something else for you to investigate.

Education Requirements to Sit for Examination

120-to-sit Rule for U.S. Education ONLY: If you are applying under the 150 semester hour pathway, you may sit for the exam when you have completed 120 semester hours of course work, including one course in each of the four required accounting content areas: financial accounting and reporting; cost or management accounting, taxation; and auditing.

NOTE: The license, however, will not be issued until you have met New York's 150 semester hour requirements for licensure.

Although I did have a BBA in accounting, I took and passed the exam before I went back to school for my master degree. I want to make sure I'm “okay” in accounting before taking the additional classes to finish the 30 accounting credits.

Note: Every new applicant is under the 150 credit, unless you filed for application before 2009 (or maybe 2011).

Note: You need to have 30 accounting credits to get a NYS license.

The 150 hour requirement went into effect August 1, 2009. That is correct.
I'm not exactly sure what you are asking.

If you license in another state you will need 4 years of experience for reciprocity in NY. Otherwise, you will still need to meet their initial license requirements. Read the NY Board’s rules for initial license and license by endorsement here: http://www.op.nysed.gov/prof/cpa/cpalic.htm

Direct all questions to them. They are the only authority and their answers count.
