I know this has probably been asked a million times but seriously, is the prospect of passing these exams actually worth the hassle? I’m asking because one thing this exam process has taught me is that I really have no intrinsic desire to become a CPA. Honestly, it’s something I’m doing because I’m supposed to do it and everyone I’ve interacted with from school/work is doing it. It’s pretty hard to be motivated to achieve something you’re indifferent towards. I’ve passed two exams and instead of feeling excited and motivated all I feel is even more annoyance and depression because it’s one more excuse for quitting that’s been taken away. Now I’m struggling to get through a single page of REG and wondering if this is finally the end of the line. Would appreciate if anyone’s been in a similar boat.

You're half way there and just now deciding if its worth it? You've already gone further than most do with the process. Just saddle up and knock it out. You'll never regret being certified.

I’m about 5 years in….it definitely has helped me in my career, but I must say, not anywhere near as much as everybody says it does.

Anything that adds an extra $10-$20 grand in your pocket is worth it. Not even mentioning the bragging rights that come with being licensed. Everyone else in your department who is not a licensed CPA will have to suck it. Just the truth!!

I've looked at this post several times, and I must say. YES it is worth it. I have failed so many times, and tried to quit so many times. I just can't let it go. Yes, I've changed materials and study tactics and going at it again 2020. I just can't believe I can't pass this exam. I refuse to believe I can't pass. So for what it's worth, I'd rather try, pass and get those letters than wonder what if. At my age, I might not get but $20 grand (about what I invested) but I'll have those letters and a story to tell when it's over.
Hey, do what you have to do, but after passing two parts it's just plain old lazy or scared to death not to go on.

    It begins with a 75

Passing the CPA exams was how I was able get out of the rut I was in when I was affected by the Recession 10 years ago.

When you have very little accounting experience with mostly retail experience, it is extremely difficult to try and convince employers to give you a shot.

Passing the CPA exams changed all that. It wasn't until over 3 years ago that I was able to continue to have steady employment in the accounting profession all thanks to passing the exams as well as the A71 forum.

The only thing now that I'm working towards now is obtaining the experience hours as well as having a CPA to sign off on it. When that happens, not only will it be an achievement but also means higher earning power as I progress through my career.

To ask if it is really worth it? HELL YES IT IS! I would still be working in retail today barely making $10hr if I did not continue to take and pass the CPA exams.

If you read all the stories of those on this forum who have passed and have either gotten promotions or pay raises, you will understand why.

So for all those on this journey, no matter what the struggle, continue and go for broke doing it. It will be worth it in the end.

You raised a very good question. If there is no intrinsic value, then it is probably not a good idea. Go for something that you really want to do and have a passion for. See more advice and decide for yourself. With declining CPA numbers, a lot of people may be asking themselves the same question you are asking.

I would say it's worth it. It gives you credentials and respect. Higher salary and more career options. I did a 5 year accounting program and have come so far. I see it CPA as a final step. So why not finish it?
