I just took REG using Roger CPA Review. I work in advisory and have zero experience in tax. My Becker material expired and I decided to switch it up for REG. I saw some of Roger’s sample videos for FAR on youtube and I loved it so decided to use him for REG. I had 3 weeks to study for the test.. and I got a 93, my highest score and the least amount of time spent studying. Roger is cheaper than Becker but if he charged 20 times more than Becker I would still 100% recommend using him. If only he made CFA and GMAT review courses….wow. Thank you Roger, from the bottom of my heart.

@ crazyleon- What if I do the Roger material and do as much as Ninja MCQs to atlas understand the concepts that are not mentioned in my review course? Will that be helpful?

@Reema – I did not use Roger for BEC. I gave up on it after Chapter 1. I skipped ahead to a later chapter and watched a couple of his vids on variance analysis and was more confused about it than before watching the videos. I'm using Ninja for my re-takes. I'd advise anyone else to do the same. Wiley test bank is also supposedly very good too.

@TBBG – disagree that you “absolutely need” to supplement Roger with some other test bank. Your opinion is respected, but so far Roger only is working out great for this guy.

My advice is work the plan. Set the study guide calendar and STICK TO IT. Hammer out all lectures, do ALL IPQs and read and highlight and you will do well. Just like he says.

So far I give Roger's material an A+. Sure spending $1,800 isn't fun, but the added comp for passing is going to pay me back 10 times just in year 1, well worth it.

@crazy – his BEC content is more than sufficient. The book isn't that thick because there really isnt that much material to cover. His cost accounting stuff is spot on, which is consensus one of the hardest areas of BEC.

If you apply yourself roger is more then enough. I thought BEC was great but you gotta take the time and really understand variances. You can't take shortcuts. What I did was pause the videos if I didn't quite understand something and read the material or rewind the video. You have to try to actively listen and not just listen for the sake of listening. If I didn't get something after I paused the video and read the book, I would go on YouTube a lot and watch videos (expecislly for FAR). Investopedia was also helpful. If I wasn't even slightly paying attention, I would walk away and comeback. It's not the hours of study but the quality. I found that I could learn in one hour of really high quality learning the same amount as if I had just half assed for four hours. I think for FAR, getting ninja MCQ is super helpful but outside of that I used roger for everything. I used Becker and had two separate memberships (once I paid and once my employer). It just didn't work for me, I didn't like the lecture at all. It may sound silly but I could relate to roger. He made weed jokes, drinking jokes and was just a lot more relatable. That's important when your listening to the guy for hours at a time. Good luck!

    @Reema –

Just to let you know, I'm not studying for the CPA exams at all right now. I'm giving myself a month off from it because I just started a new job and I studied continuously from July 1st 2016 (when I bought Roger) thru August 12, 2017. My brain is fried. I have to give it a chance to cool off for a month or so before I start working on my re-takes and studying for REG, which I've not yet taken.

I really don't want to say much more than I already have on this thread. And the main reason is because I don't want to de-rail you. Or, who knows, maybe I already have and if so, I apologize.
The reason is because **everyone** does it differently. What didn't work for me may very well work just fine for you. For every piece of advice given on here, there will be someone who will disagree and tell you to do the opposite.

If Roger is working for you, or you can make it work, then that's just splendid. Some of us have rotten luck on these exams, and/or we burn out on studying, and/or we struggle with our review course, and/or we work so much that suddenly the CPA exams get shoved down to the bottom of our personal priority list, or any number of things.

Let's just say that Roger hasn't worked for me. I'm in the minority, as most people like him. He's a very quirky guy, like I am, and that's somewhat why I chose his program. I love his risque sense of humour and the off-handed cracks he makes about pop culture and other stuff and although I'm much younger than him, I grew up when much of what he reminisces about was very much a part of the world. And, I love the fact that most if not all of his international students probably don't understand even half of what he says because he talks so fast, and they probably get none of the jokes and subtle comments. But – his program has quite a few issues that, unfortunately, I have not been able to get past, even with very dedicated studying for months on end. I'm hoping for the best when I purchase Ninja in the near future.

Anyway, best of luck to you!!

    +1 recommendation for Roger. I'm a fan.

Passed all four sections on the first try in 6 months using 95% Roger only. I did find the Ninja notes helpful on a couple sections, I'm not a structured not taker so the Ninja notes covered that weakness. I didn't find it necessary to supplement MCQ's.

If I had to go back in time and give myself advise I'd say buy the basic Roger package, study each section until you're getting 90's on the sample tests, and then take the exam.

I'm going as Roger Philipp for Halloween this year. Then I'm going to go surfing on the tide in O.C. Surfing is like standing on a tippicanoe. You need good “Control.”

Yeah Roger and his ridiculous Venice (California) beach bum sayings and mnemonics. I like the one for Govt. Accounting, to classify the fund accounts…that's the only one that stuck with me. PDCSG, IPIPEA = Police Department Consents to Smoking Grass, so I smoke my PIPE Alot. Beautiful. I'm sure he'll be flattered that you're going as him for Halloween. Be sure to send him a photo of that. It'll stroke his ego even more.

All the haters here are so cute. So essentially some people on this thread would prefer to listen to dry as desert videos that are so over-burdened with nonsense detail that it's nearly impossible to stay awake than stay engaged with humorous, creative, informative lectures that a vast majority of people attest to being more than enough information to score in the higher end of the scoring range.

crazy – you pointed it out earlier that all folks will get here are opinions. you stated yours and its noted. a lot of folks including myself have stated their opinion that Roger has been working for them. Why the need to discount their opinion? Its working for me, and for lots of others. If not for you then that's fair, but why try and act like the opinions of others are “Roger in disguise.”

Tommy the cat, my post was simply in response to the people on this thread who discredit the humorous and summarative approach that Roger uses. If they had simply stated that it doesn't work for them, that's one thing, but most of the posts are clearly insulting Roger's cpa format (i.e., the people saying Roger thinks he's so funny and that his material is extremely lacking.)Therefore, instead of making mature points, I'll swing back using their demeaning approach to defend Roger.

As a lot of you said, he does trim a lot of details. I passed all 4 with him without any supplement in 4 months. Personally, he was awesome and enough to pass the exams. As you can see from my signature, I passed with 78~81s. He teaches just enough to pass, but not enough to get you late 80s to 90s.
So, if you would get really bothered about low passing scores, you probably want to go for something else that covers more in depth.

Roger was perfect for someone like me who tried to pass all 4 in one window.
