TBBGParticipantI just took REG using Roger CPA Review. I work in advisory and have zero experience in tax. My Becker material expired and I decided to switch it up for REG. I saw some of Roger’s sample videos for FAR on youtube and I loved it so decided to use him for REG. I had 3 weeks to study for the test.. and I got a 93, my highest score and the least amount of time spent studying. Roger is cheaper than Becker but if he charged 20 times more than Becker I would still 100% recommend using him. If only he made CFA and GMAT review courses….wow. Thank you Roger, from the bottom of my heart.
Audit 86
BEC 75
FAR 82
REG 93

KIMTParticipantI had difficulty passing BEC, I switched from becker to Roger Cram course along with Ninja MCQ and finally passed with a 79.

Jdn9201ParticipantDitto on the recommendation for Roger. I passed before the exam changes but I used Rogers program alone (no supplement) and passed all 4 parts on the first attempt. I realize people learn differently but I thought his test banks were more than enough. My score on his practice exams were 5-10 points lower than my score on the actual exam. IMO Becker is highly overrated. If you want someone who is going to teach you the essentials and actually not bore you at the same time Roger is your guy.
BEC - 88 8/29/15
REG - 82 11/14/15
AUD - 83 1/8/16
FAR - 80 2/29/16August 22, 2017 at 5:11 pm #1611842
RadezParticipantI'll also endorse Roger. My approach was to listen to the lectures in the car and then drill the test bank until I had successfully answered every question correctly. The test bank ranged from ~800 questions (both MCQ and TBS) to 1600 per section. Answering them all correctly usually meant drilling the equivalent of twice that number. It has proved to be a successful strategy so far.

Superdude3000ParticipantI love rogers, he gets the major concepts across well and trims the fat perfectly if you ask me. I also supplement with Beckers test bank because I got it for free so why not, but I think I could pass all for with just his program if I had to no problem. I think his IPQs are also great, they're very similar to the types of questions you see on the exam IMO.

shawn in VAParticipant“trims the fat perfectly if you ask me”….per superdude 30000
He trims the fat TOO well. So well that he left out so much stuff on BEC. I have his whole program. Its a waste of $1700 compared to WIley CPA Excel. Wiley is very thorough and detailed books and questions. Lectures a bit dry though but bearable.
Roger is also really obnoxious and gets on my nerves at times and talks WAAAAY to fast. I could not stand him in that BEC lesson where he was explaining the flow of inventory and explaining WIP (work in process inventory) and sang “WHIP IT..WHIP IT GOOD” and started pounding his hand on the whiteboard. God what an annoying person.
Luckily I was able to sell the books and give my user name and password to a coworker and recouped about $850.

HoldMyBeerCPAParticipant@shawn in VA…you may want to edit that last part. I'm sure that may be a violation of the T&C's for the review course.
August 23, 2017 at 11:25 pm #1614581
shawn in VAParticipantI do not know what T&C is.
everyone at my work does it, all my CPA candidate friends do it….relax and take a couple XANAX or 10 for that matter.

LawGuyParticipantI am using Roger, and I definitely recommend it. I think he puts effort into choosing MCQ's that will be beneficial to helping you learn the material, rather than simply trying to find difficult questions.
I studied for FAR while working full time. I watched all the videos and answered maybe 50% of the MCQ's and I worked maybe 20% of the TBS at most. I passed with an 81 so I'm definitely satisfied with it. That being said, I'm more of an abstract learner and I generally feel like paying close attention to lectures is a more efficient learning strategy (as opposed to working a gazillion practice problems).
He recommends that you watch all the videos and work all the problems 2-3 times, but I think that anybody who watches all the videos and works all of his problems once (and reviews the reasons for missed answers) will pass.

ReemaParticipantI do like the Roger review course especially his way of teaching. However I don't feel much confident. I am studying for BEC now. And somewhere I don't feel confident about the material. I guess very little is covered in the study material. Also the sims covered are very less and very straight forward. Anyone else felt this way or am I the only one feeling like this?

AnonymousInactiveI am in agreement with most, if not all, about what @Shawn_in_VA says above about Roger. Roger's strength is that he does keep you motivated. He's energetic. I thought he was pretty good for FAR. There's a truckload of stuff to know for that exam and he gets you through it *pretty well*. I am in full agreement though, about his “trimming TOO MUCH of the fat.” He waters it way, way down and his explanations of some topics is downright confusing – pensions and fixed assets are two of his weakest topics. OMG, he makes such a glorified mess on the whiteboard – accountants are supposed to be neat and organized!! LOL I know I am! It's a wonder that he had a career in public before becoming a CPA guru because (correct me if I'm wrong) there's not much room for that stuff.
I used Roger for AUD too. It was ok, but again, too much of the fat was trimmed I think.
I used Gleim's book for BEC because after watching a few of Roger's BEC videos and after reading some stuff on here, I knew that he was not good for BEC. His textbook for BEC is quite skinny compared to some others (like Gleim.)
Having said that – I think Roger is very good for very intelligent people who just somehow intuitively “get it all” and only need a quick breeze-thru of the topics, and that's all they need in order to pass. For others, like me, who maybe don't have an IQ on a par with Newton or Pascal, Roger isn't really a good fit. His textbooks are also very, very sketchy and incomplete.
Compared to Gleim's texts, and what little I've seen of Becker's, Roger's are just….not good, that's all I can say. If he “trims the fat perfectly” in his lectures, his texts are almost the opposite. There's way too much detail – often, paragraphs and paragraphs – of unnecessary junk. And yet, even with the unnecessary junk, they feel watered down, like a lot of details are missing. Weird.Am I a paid advertising rep from Gleim? No.
I still have REG to take, and…you guessed it…I have to use Roger for it because I paid for it long ago. Not looking forward to it, but I hope I'll get through it. I don't feel that the $2,000 I paid was really worth it though. $1,000-1,500 would've been more in line with the quality of his program.
He's definitely not for everyone, but he's got a lot of customers and I don't think he really changes much from year to year because of all the positive feedbacks he gets.
I gave him 3 stars on Yelp (or maybe it was only 2) and I probably looked like the pork chop in the synagogue, amongst a plethora of 5-star ratings from people who passed all 4 with him
in a short time. In a nutshell, I'd say he's for advanced students only, who don't need much distillation of topics and just basically know everything already and need a recap of it all before testing.🙂

shawn in VAParticipantCrazy Leon said it well. I was trying to say that in my post above 🙂 but don't have such writing skills.
Roger definitely has a large following and his videos are pretty much the same year over year, but he did change things up a little for the new 2017 exam. He really has no reason to change his style b/c he taylors to a certain kind of candidate.
I used him for REG and got a 75 (barely studied), he was not bad bad but then again I do taxes for a living. He definitely is for the candidate that has a good baseline of the content. For someone like me 10 years out of school I have no baseline except for REG (Tax specifically) b/c I work in tax.
His course is overpriced as well. Gleim and Wiley are both cheaper and MUCH more thorough.
August 24, 2017 at 10:58 pm #1615175
AnonymousInactive@Reema – I'd advise you to seek other review materials for BEC, like I did. After watching some of Roger's videos, and comparing the size of his textbook with Gleim's and Becker's, I knew how much he was missing. I didn't want to risk it. Mind you, I already paid for Roger. Effectively I lost $500 of the $2,000 that I paid him because his BEC sucks.
