Hi guys, was wondering if i can get some advice. I took AUD first and it definitely did not go in my favor. I finally passed it and gained confidence/learned how to study for the CPA way better. I took BEC and passed it on the first try with an 81. Now I am studying for REG and i am taking it in 26 days. I am using Becker and I am midway through chapter 4. I also work in tax so I feel like I know most of the little things from nature.

    Is business law tested heavily?

Do I have enough time to conquer the book by the time I take my test?

Are becker simulations helpful in terms of the sims asked in the actual exam?

    Any advice helps.

    Thanks!

    Is business law tested heavily?

-It depends on the test. I definitely had some blaw questions. I think it is an area to make sure you study and do the MCQs in Becker. However, I would focus more on the corporate taxation so S corp C corp etc.

Do I have enough time to conquer the book by the time I take my test?

-Again it depends on your study plan. How many hours are you studying a week? Do you feel you need two weeks for review etc. I think 26 days is enough to finish Becker and have good time to review, but that is my opinion based on my study habits.

Are becker simulations helpful in terms of the sims asked in the actual exam?

-YES. I would not skip these for REG. I felt they were pretty spot on with the format and also nature of the simulations I saw on the actual test. It is just another way to reinforce and study the material so I would do as much of them as you can.

I would definitely focus on the taxation of corporations. It is always a favorite on the test to throw you a few multiple choice questions and definitely a nice complicated SIM in that area based on other's and my experience.

Witty, can you share with us what is your new method of studying for this exam? it seems that is working for you since you passed BEC on your first try, and i don't think BEC is a lot easier than Audit.

Witty, I would leave at least a week for review, so you might want to cover a bit more than a chapter a week until your review period. Unless you are a tax lawyer, you will still need to stay for B-law. About 1/3 of my MCQs were B-law. I cannot recall what I had for Sims, but you don't want to be guessing at every third MCQ question. Also, you will be well prepared with Becker, but keep in mind the questions in the actual CPA exam will be conceptual, meaning they will take a typical question like what if there are two mortgages applied to a situation -instead ask what if there were three mortgages? So think Becker questions with a twist.

As far as the SIMs go, I didn't really practice them for REG, but I felt I really know the material, so it wasn't as necessary as other parts. I would only recommend this if you are comfortable with all of the material.

    BEC - 84

    1. B-Law is enough of the exam that it warrants almost as much attention as Tax. Tax is hard because it requires conceptual understanding, b-law is just a lot of memorization, but dedicate a decent amount of time to it, it could be the tipping point to bring you to a 75.

    2. Conquer the tax part of the book, that's the stuff you need to know really well. That will help you when you get to the sims. B-law isn't really much to conquer, because it's actually pretty simple stuff, just requires memorization and a little logic.

    3. Personally, I don't think the sims help at all, but I think that's the nature of the exam. They help you with regard to how a question would be set up, but I would focus more on understanding and being able to apply tax concepts, I think that would help more than just practicing the sims over and over again.

Basically what Nessie said. If you understand the material really well, you will do fine. I personally got the Ninja MCQs to get more practice because I've memorized the Becker questions and there were certain topics I felt Becker didn't explain enough, TBD on whether that helped.

    FAR - 76 Oct 2015 (Becker)
    REG - 87 Apr 2016 (Becker + Ninja MCQ) - 3rd time's the charm!
    AUD - 82 Feb 2016 (Becker)
    BEC - 85 May 2016 (Becker)

    Thank you guys!

Martin, my way of studying totally helped me for BEC. Took a lot of my time but clearly that's what truly helped me. Everyone is different but so what I do is:

    1) Listen to the lecture while highlighting the book (section of each chapter at a time)
    2) Hand write an outline of the section
    3) Do the MC for that section and write down the rules for whatever I get wrong
    4) Once I am done doing this for the entire book, I print out the Becker outlines and listen to the lectures again while adding anything the outline is missing by hand (with colored pens). This is also per section and again I repeat the MC.
    5) After each chapter I do the sims and write them down by hand if I don't know the answers well.
    6) Then every night for the week before the exam I read over the outlines.

A lot of time to put on it but it helped me finally pass Audit and it worked for me. Because I work in tax and have taken a bunch of classes I am not necessarily writing down the chapters after listening to the lecture for the first time since I really only do that to teach the material to myself. This is basically just a review of all the tax classes I've put myself through in college/masters.

    Hope this helps!
