I don\'t have it in me to be a CPA

I feel like I can’t do it or that I just don’t have it in me to become a CPA. I have an MBA/ACC and have been working as finance analyst for 7 years. I started giving CPA exams in 2016. So far, I have passed BEC and REG. I sat for AUD on Jan 12 and will be sitting for FAR on Mar 9. When I stop to think about that, it seems sooo overwhelming, and I feel like I have jumped on the wrong train. I am scared that I my license application may not get approved or I may not be able to get the professional experience required. But, other times, when I am busy preparing, I don’t feel that way. Does anyone ever feel like that or have felt like that before passing all 4 sections?

You passed 2 already. Look around your office at the CPAs there. Are they all way better than you?

If you don't want to be a CPA, then that's different. Of course it's up to you whether you'll keep trying or not.

    AUD - 64, 80 Passed on 10/09/17

    BEC - 75 Passed on 12/09/17

    FAR - 69, 71, 73, 83 Passed on 06/10/18

    REG - 81 Passed on 09/10/17

Thanks for your reply, but where I work, there are no CPAs. It's a public global transportation company. We have a finance controller, but he is not a CPA. And yes, regardless of how I feel, I am going to continue trying until I pass. Quitting is not even an option. I was just wondering if anyone else ever felt that way, that's all.

Yes I felt like that when I had not passed any sections and failed couple times. However after I passed my first section, I knew I can finish this exam!

You are half way done-of course we all feel like giving up at one time or the other, but the right mindset is a part of this process. Once you become a CPA, it's yours forever, it's a designation that's not going to be held against you-it's grueling process, but once you start, gotta finish:) You got this!

Thank you so much for your encouraging comments. You are absolutely right. Once, I have my CPA, no one can take it away from me. I got this and cannot and will not give up. Again, thanks!!!

Thanks. Its good to know that there are others that have been where I am. You are right. Maybe I feel this way, because, I am not the least bit prepared for my FAR exam on Mar 9, 2018, and I have done a bad job in scheduling it without allowing enough time for preparation.

@utpal – I'm just now studying for my first exam (FAR) and those thoughts creep into my head sometimes. What I've done is put a list of 3 reasons I want to pass and 3 reasons I don't want to fail up in my work space at home. I see it everyday and it reminds me that, at least for me, this journey is bigger than just obtaining the CPA title. It's about showing my kids that nothing is impossible if you're diligent enough and willing to sacrifice for it. Conversely, if I give up I'm showing them the opposite of that. That's obviously just one of my reasons but you understand what I mean. I would suggest doing something like this for yourself. It might not seem like a big thing but when you see it every single day it starts to ingrain itself in you and you'll find that you dig deeper and with more intense focus. You can do this!

An MBA isn't really that valuable…I mean the cert and most of the people. I think pretty much any CPA can get an MBA with a minimum of effort…not every MBA can be a CPA. There's no license to it…there's no standard, there's no inherent value. It only has the value someone else gives it.

You've passed two exams…that means you can pass the others. Finish it. Do the work.

@utpal put it in perspective as well. I'm sure you can plow thru this tough phase. It is easy to “give up” but also know it is completely “ok to fail” as long as you learn from it. Lots of folks here would LOVE to be in your position (have an MBA, have 1/2 done). Just to give you more perspective, i tried the CPA back when i was younger during my Big 4 days, i failed and failed and failed and failed…..like LOTS of fail…8 yr span…lots of 71 and 73 scores…1/2 of it is procrastination and the other 1/2 is fear of taking exams since i've failed so much so i ended up taking a break for a while. So what i learned from taking a break from it was………it still hurts more to NOT try so i forget everything about all the past failures and hesitation and concentrate on the present/future.

Sometimes, it just takes perspective and finding your purpose on WHY you want to pass. Obviously you want to pass to get a better job outlook in the future but to me, it became that and it also became a personal mission that i won't let myself give up without trying my extreme best. So with that said, it took awhile but i got there eventually…lots of failing but its all worth it especially if you know you want to stay in the accounting/business type industry….if you want to be a graphic designer or something entirely different all along then that's another story.

Good luck, tons of people in this board have been in the same boat as you and as long as you try your best, the results usually play out and you dont have that empty feeling that you didnt try (which is WAY WORSE THAN FAILING).

    YOU WILL PASS!

    Guys,
Thank you soooo much for your kind comments and feedback. I will definitely post the 3 reasons why I want to become CPA in my workspace at home. I believe, that will be very inspiring on a daily basis. I will definitely not give up. I was looking for some moral support today from the CPA community and I received it. I cannot thank you all enough for that. Now, everytime, I feel even a little defeated, I will open up this page and read your wonderful comments. After starting this post, I was feeling a little guilty that I am bring negativity on the forum, but right now, I am glad that I started this post, because, it helped me so much, and it also help someone else who may be having the same feelings as me. Again, Thanks everyone!!!

We all have bad days in this process. I remember when I first started studying for FAR I felt like I'd been hit by a tidal wave of information and I was never going to be able to pass. Even now, studying for my third exam, I want to pitch my study book in a fire sometimes. You have 2 passes already, so you've shown that you can do it. It's a matter of finishing out the process.
