    Hey guys,

I was just wondering what classes constitute a “general core” education requirement for the CPA examination?

I have contacted my board on numerous occasions and they have told me to contact the schools I’m going to/went to, refusing to “give me a definitive answer or pre-approve classes.” Simultaneously, the schools registrars/advisors have been unable to help me understand what constitutes the definition of a “general core” for purposes of the CPA examination. I reached out to one professor at the community college, who simply told me to take business classes; however, most of the business classes, I have already taken at my undergraduate classes. Might try a few more professors as well.

My state is a mess right now and I’m getting extremely frustrated nobody can give me the answer I need. If anyone has any advice on getting this answer or at least knows where I can obtain it, I would greatly appreciate the help.

    Thanks.

Does your state require a Bachelor's degree or equivalent? That's what my state required plus some extra business classes.

    FAR - NINJA in Training
    REG - NINJA in Training

    “A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited four-year college
36 semester hours in accounting courses (may include basic or introductory accounting courses
30 semester hours in business administration and economics courses, such as:
    Business statistics
    Marketing strategies
    Principles of marketing
    Organizational behavior
    Principles of management
    Commercial law
    Business law
    Managerial finance
    Financial management
    Business finance
60 semester hours in general education courses
The remainder of the 150 semester hour requirement may consist of any for-credit courses”

They don't actually define what is meant by a “general education” requirement. Would a philosophy elective count as a general education requirement (since it wasn't a free elective)? The board refused to answer my question, when I asked today, giving me a bs statement about not pre-approving classes or telling me they couldn't answer my question. So f-ing frustrating. I have a Bachelor's degree.

@Ratfus, hmmm…”general education courses” sounds like the normal “any type of class” required in order to graduate from the university.

What I mean is that…for the university I went too, I was told that “general education courses” are like your English writing classes, intro to philosophy, biology 101, intro to calculus, astronomy, physics, foreign language, etc., etc. It's like any type class of lower division “general education courses” and any upper division “general education course” that usually do not go to your major even though there will be some that do.

But, that's my own interpretation though.

This is what my professors gave us when I was in school. Educational Requirements for CPA Licensure

Note that it's for California! Hope it helps.

Thanks guys, you have been much more helpful than my state-board, who just basically throws a legal disclaimer at me, telling me they can't actually tell me, which classes I can/should take; they told me to contact the school I went to for my classes. At the same time, my school told me to contact my state board. I think it might have something to do with my board getting consolidated into another department.

You guys have a similar problem?

Almasy, unfortunately, that document doesn't show, which classes are considered “general credit core classes,” but I appreciate the help.
