FAR Study Issues

    Hi All,

I am using Becker as it was provided by my company. I do not start work until August so I can study full time. I am scheduled to take FAR in 4 weeks and I am on F3. I feel like I’m having some issues going from the Becker lectures (specifically Gearty) to the MCQ. It seems like Gearty is simply reading the textbook to me and I do not find that to be helpful. My strategy thus far has been to do as many MCQ as possible and really learn from them. I seem to learn better this way.

I am planning on getting the NINJA MCQ for FAR, but I am wondering what the verdict is on the NINJA book. I think Becker does a great job in some places, but I think that I need a supplement that would better explain some of the more math intensive parts of FAR.

I hope someone can give me some feedback on whether they found the NINJA book to be a wise investment.

    Thanks!!

In my opinion, I would say if you already have a book from Becker, I would not invest in another book. Ninja MCQ is all I would buy. I used Ninja Book for FAR (my first exam). I bought ten point combo which included book, audio, notes and flashcards. I have re-take in July but not because I think book was bad but I studied for almost 10 weeks and scheduled my exam too FAR out and I was burned out. I have heard people passing just using Becker.

I cannot stand Gearty. I am doing the extra course called “Final Review” for FAR right now, and every chapter I hear Gearty’s voice I cringe. I am writing on Friday and am upset I wasted precious time on this guy. He is actually confusing me with his inability to explain. Is seems like he is on his cell phone distracted doing this lecture. Now Olinto is an amazing instructor. He is precise and useful at this point.

I truly believe Gearty is to blame for a lot of people’s failures/needing to supplement with the materials.
Get NINJA MCQs and google stuff you don’t know. BTW Gearty instructs in 3/4 of the CPA topics.

Gearty is a bit dry and Olinto is a bit colorful lol! But given the two, I think I prefer Olinto.

Thanks for the input so far everybody. I can't take Gearty. He uses “again” as a filler word way to much which drives me nuts. I think the becker book is mostly good though. I just need some more clarifications in specific areas. How about the NINJA notes? Are these worth it along side the MCQs?

Yes I would say Ninja notes are also worth it besides MCQ.

If I have to listen to Olinto mis-pronounce fi- duciary one more time, I will throat punch somebody. Lol. I like the ninja notes, ninja mcqs and ninja blitz for review. If you have the money, I say buy them. It can’t hurt. I use the online Becker pdf book. That way I get the updated version without the painful lecture.
