Experience Requirement

Hey guys, just to get some peace of mind, experience only counts after earning your bachelor’s degree right? I worked 2,000 hours as an intern before earning my bachelor’s and was hoping that would satisfy the requirement but I’ve seen a lot of posts saying the former.

Just wanted to get some confirmation so that I do not get my hopes up. I had to stop working when the pandemic began due to some child care issues and did not work 2,000 hours after earning my bachelor’s.

If there's no law specifiy that experience must be AFTER the degree, then it is an acceptable experience as long as it fit the criteria and no being double dipping (not used as college intern credits).

Chances are a lot of people don't actually find college internship hours fit the criteria because of the minimum weekly hours requirements. In NYS, you must have solid payroll proof of 20 hours min every week to counted. If I have 20 hours to spare, it will be call a part time job not internship. (No offense, in NYS part time title pay more than internships. So I always prefer part time. Got to pay for my tuition.)

I would look to see what the state in which you are applying for the license dictates as experience. In NYS the rule is part-time or full time experience under a CPA. Part time is defined as 20 hour minimum a week, or the week does not count.

I took a quick peek at what TN say (I am assuming you are licensing in TN based on your signature) and they say:

    1. The experience required to be demonstrated for issuance of an initial certificate pursuant to T.C.A. §62-1-106(f) shall meet the following requirements:

    2. Experience may consist of providing any type of services or advice using accounting, attest, management advisory, financial advisory, tax or consulting skills.

    3. Acceptable experience shall include employment in industry, government, academia or public practice

    4. No fewer than 2000 hours of experience (earned in no less than one year or more than three years). Experience must be earned within the ten (10) years immediately preceding the application for certification.

Based on that I do not see a requirement that the experience should be after a Bachelors degree, nor the same weekly limit as NYS. They do have a time limit of at least 1 year and no more than 3. SO if it took you 4 years to get 2000, I don't think it will work.

I am adding the link to TN website on CPA licensing where i found the information. I would look it over. You can also call the state board and ask them your question with the specifics of your situation. It wouldn't hurt to ask.
