Can we discuss the insultingly long amount of time it takes to get licensed? - Page 2

For how much work and BS we put up with interrupting our lives for this exam and waiting on scores, is it unacceptable how long it takes for a state board to finally give you your license. In a world where everyone is trying to “go green” and everything is done electronically, how does it take any longer than a couple of weeks to approve a license where the candidate has painstakingly compiled everything requested and submitted it timely? I am venting here, and I know for every 100 candidates who waited months for their license there is bound to be 1 person who waited two weeks, but I think this is very poor on the state board’s part. I have called and asked for updates and they are very vague, apart from my first one. They told me that my experience letter from my boss needed to be on company letterhead (which is nitpicky to say the least considering he filled out a form stating the firm he works for on the experience page). What chapped my ass was that I had to call to find that out and if I hadn’t I likely would have been waiting around for weeks to hear that info. Who else is waiting on a license and is fed up? End of rant.

In Oregon the wait time isn't too bad, maybe 4-6 weeks, but the problem here is that after passing the four exams and ethics exam, you have to go through an annoyingly long application process that requires writing an essay displaying how you meet their six core competencies which requires providing multiple examples for each competency, usually the essay ends up being around 6-8 pages (it's worse if you're going the tax route rather than audit) and you have to provide your work experience for the last 10 years, regardless if it was related to accounting or not. It's definitely frustrating after slaving away for the exams to have to write a long essay and provide a bunch of detail on a very long application (and of course, more fees). I've heard of people who took 5 years to write the essay and fill out the application. Does any other state require so much when applying for the license after passing the exams?

Like Accounting_is_Taxing, I'm also in Virginia – it was about the same processing timeline for me; it was a delightful surprise. I had my additional transcript sent to the board on 10/20, and sent my ethics exam certificate, experience verification and CPE certification by mail on 10/21. I had a Board rep reach out to me on 10/30 saying all they still needed was the additional transcript, to which I replied it should have already been sent. He said he would check, and by 10/30, my portal online had an active license and license number. Never got an official email or anything from them (or even a reply from the rep), I just happened to check the portal. Guessing the certificate will come in the coming weeks.

    BEC - 90 (7/19, 8 weeks)
    FAR - 78 (10/19, 10 weeks)
    AUD - 75 (12/19, 8 weeks)
    REG - 90 (7/20, ~12 weeks, split up)

Ethics - 97 (~6 hours to go through the material & take the quiz)
Licensed in Virginia (10/20, ~1.5 weeks to process after submitting everything)
