Hi everyone, I’m currently a working mom of a 1.5 year old just starting the cpa exam. I’m just wondering if there’s any other moms here who might have some tips! My husband is usually pretty busy so its 50/50 whether or not he can watch our son so I can find time to study.. how do other moms manage to find time to study with a full time job??

@Painted_Jeans@Kblader I am far from a genius, but due to parental guilt I have spread my studying for each section over 12 weeks so I miss as few of my daughters activities as possible which allows for ample time to study. Additionally I am fortune to have a job where I “only” work 40-45 hours a week none of the crazy 60 plus hours weeks others are dealing with. I am certain you two will do a great as well.

Thanks krstnam! Sounds like I'm gonna have to have a talk with my husband about sacrifice for the greater good haha

I'm a working mom to a 5 year old boy. Just waiting on my materials so, I can begin studying (haven't had to study for anything since 12/2012). I joined this forum so, I can get some insight into how you all handle day to day life/work/family, studying, and exams. I am very lucky to have the support of my husband to help when he can (even though he has some pretty wild work hours). I'm also planning on flexing my time at work when school begins again, that way I have time to spend with my son and time to really study.

I finally signed up because I'm on this path and somewhat wondering WHAT AM I DOING THIS FOR? I have faith though that this is what I'm supposed to be doing.

My hats off to those of you with beautiful, young children under foot. They are precious. You CAN and ARE doing this!

I'm needing some support as I started this path almost 20 years ago, taking about 15 accounting courses after finishing my MA in economics (wanted something more practical work-wise and the CPA path seemed to fit). Fast forward 20 years, 3 children (now ages 13-20) and 12 years of owning a small tax business later and I am returning to my CPA goal only to feel like people at the firm I joined one year ago may be looking at me thinking “what the heck?”. I so appreciate all of your creative ways of making time to study and reach your goal. I am still working on some of the coursework to fulfill the 36 hours but am going to take a break, sit for all 4 parts over the next 12-18 months and then finish the las 3 courses once the CPA exam storm has passed.

BUT I'm a bit in a lull as I finish up my current Government and Not For Profit course through LSU, anticipating what it will be like to study and take the exams.

Any advice? I REALLY want to pass the first time through (who doesn't?!?), not caring about the score, just to PASS! But also a bit worried not about my discipline to study but being able to absorb AND retain for the exam the material. I am thinking of doing FAR first.

@Michelle – everybody is so different. My biggest challenge initially was figuring out how to study again. It took me 6-12 months to figure out how to get my mind back into learning mode. I think my biggest mistake was being an idiot consumer and falling into all the gimmicky advertisements. OMG BEC is chaning, TAKE THE EXAM ASAP!! OMG, FAR is changing, take the exam ASAP!! Like an idiot, I drank the kool-aid and rushed to take my exams several times when I was unprepared. I think last fall, had I resigned myself to losing BEC and focused on passing FAR/AUD, I'd be in a different situation right now. At the end of the day, all of these companies selling CPA material are here to make money off us, so is NASBA and they do what it takes to keep revenues coming in.
For me, beyond finding the right balance of study/work/home life, the most important part of studying has been staying engaged/focused during study time.

The hours requirement, are you talking about credit hours at college? If so, does your state allow you to take the CPA exam before you've fulfilled the education requirements?

Thank you for your thoughts and journey story. Your post reminds me to “stay the course” and not become distracted by the hype around me.

I am able to take the exam with 24 accounting credit hours; I will have these on transcripts by mid-September once I finish this one Governmental course.

I think what is coming to light most in reading these posts and anticipating my CPA prep to begin in September is to clear my life and get my whole family on board. Friends also. I can already get a vibe from a couple of friends (or I may be imaging it) that they are tired of me pursuing this and work simultaneously. I'm just going to have to give myself permission to be focused for these next 12-18 months and let those in my life know that “no” will be coming out of my mouth much more than it has in the past.
Luckily my workplace will reimburse me for a large chunk of the Becker/exam costs once I pass. Even more motivation to pass yes?!?

I wish you all the best and thank you again.

Hi everyone! I am a single mom of an energetic 4 year old. I passed 3 exams then missed FAR by one point (ARGH so close!) now I just need to re-pass BEC while I wait for my FAR score. I work full time, was in graduate school, and passing the CPA exam. I have no social life, and have broken up with my boyfriend many a time over the CPA stress. I don’t really spend as much time as I would like with my little girl. But I figured this part of her life, she won’t remember I wasn’t there for bed time usually. My secret to doing all this? My parents! Thank the Lord for my parents because I surly can’t afford day care.

I am so glad to hear I am not the only mom struggling here. your stories mean a lot.

Working mom here too! I have three boys…6, 7, and 9 years old. I went back to finish my accounting degree two years ago when they were 4, 5, and 7, and graduated last December. Started working in January as a top 30 firm in audit. Loving it, but it's definitely busy. In late March, I started studying for FAR and took it May 30. Took AUD on July 6, and REG is scheduled for Sep. 5. Once I get my scores for AUD/REG in late September, we'll see about BEC and/or retakes. The only way I feel I'm able to do it is with a ton of support from my husband. I am also able to work 7:30 am to 4 pm right now, with a 15-minute commute one way. I come home, study for 60-90 minutes until my husband picks up the boys and gets home. We race around for an hour or two, making dinner, getting homework done, cleaning up, etc., Then, I go back to studying for another 1-2 hours. I do that Mon-Thurs, take Friday off, and then usually 4-6 hours each on Sat/Sun while my husband generally keeps the boys busy. There is also more screen/tablet time for them right now then I'd like, but you do what you have to do. 🙂 It is not an exciting life, and I am pretty much telling friends and family “no” for just about anything unless it is Friday night, my night off from studying. But I'm hoping I can be “really” miserable for 8-10 months instead of being “semi” miserable and dragging it out for longer. Of course, it depends on whether I will need to retake any. But, again, my husband views it as something that is important for our family and something we are doing “together.” It makes a huge difference…not to say we both don't get frustrated at times and sick of it all, but we just have our heads down and are trying to get through it. Best of luck to all the mamas out there!!

Yes, I did it, a single mom working her butt off passed all the CPA exams! Moms (and dads) don't give up, the CPA is doable and worth while.
