    Hey Guys,

Now that I’m licensed, I’m applying to firms soon and looking for some resume fillers. My small private firm will not pay for these memberships so it would be out of my pocket. I was wondering if it’s worth joining the state society of CPAs or AICPA? thought these would be 2 good things to be able to put on it as I’m struggling to fit stretch my resume on 1 page, need to find some volunteer work too.

I've been an AICPA member since day one. Never joined my state society.

I have always been a member of my state societies and have enjoyed all the opportunities to meetup with other members. In non-COVID we meet 10 months a year for lunch with a guest speaker and receive CPE for attending. I can’t wait for those to resume. I also attend a Monthly session with other tax people to discuss current issues we are facing to complete returns, respond to authorities or research advice. No CPE for this but it is a “master class” in tax. These are wonderful opportunities to benefit from dedicated folks who have been in practice a long time. I did not use these for job hunting but might have been successful if I had. I did get a mentor through my state society and she helped me rewrite my resume. I have not joined AICPA but my public employers have been members. It is really expensive.
State societies usually offer a reduced rate for CPA candidates – I encourage you to find out what activities they offer for interaction with members beyond CPE only offerings.

I was an AICPA member and New York society member when I worked in public accounting because my employer required it. When I left public I discontinued my memberships.

In all the years I was a member of these, they did absolutely nothing for my career.

monikernc brought up some nice benefits but I have no interest in any of that and would never pay my own money to join any of them. To me, it's a complete waste of money. I still don't even know why my firm required membership.

@Thunder.. I don't know why you struggle so but WHY are you trying to tackle two at once? That sounds crazy to me…which ones are you working on?

As for the society memberships topic that has been hijacked here, @Limo let us know what you decide to do about that. I highly recommend the state society for knowledge transfer and networking.

@monikernc lol no worries. yes I will! It's primarily for resume purposes. Not sure if $300 + is worth 2 lines on my resume haha.

Limousine.. I am not sure it is either but most states also have a career center, too where you can post resume or search for jobs. Colorado's is not worth it – they use OpHaus and it is awful for mid-career. Maybe good for early career. My resume lists it as CO Society of CPA Associate Member in Good Standing
