Just curious because I am very nervous about the Exam after I graduate next semester. I have a 3.3 Accounting GPA and a 3.6 Overall GPA from AACSB State school. Simply put, I outwork other students and am probably average intelligence. Thanks for your responses and sorry if this question is somewhat irrelevant!

Not sure if there is a correlation but if you are a hard worker and put in the time you will pass.
But I graduated Cum Laude so there's that.

January 13, 2016 at 4:50 am #754693REG-FTW86ParticipantI wasn't an over achiever in college. My GPA sucked. I'm 3/4 done but it's taking forever and I started studying two years after I graduated. So it wasn't fresh. I study more for these exams than I ever did in college. If you're smart you may get done with one try each. A lot of folks on here have multiple attempts for various reasons. Life happens. The exam takes commitment. Roger CPA review's catch phrase “if you study you will pass.” Some have to study more than others is all.

Thanks for the advice. I should graduate Cum Laude as well. Only because I worked my ass off though.@tHendry
Thanks for the advice as well. I will start the Exam right after I graduate as you have basically suggested. That way the material is still fresh. Hopefully Indint struggle too much with the “life happens” though… Kinda nervous about that.@patelhj1
Determination and Committment seem to be the most important traits in order to pass the Exam. Goodluck and keep it up!Thanks for all your replies to ease my anxiousness! Keep at it!!
January 13, 2016 at 5:17 am #754696AnonymousInactivethis test has NOTHING to do with intelligence or GPA. CPA exan tests your ability to take tests and commitment to studying for them. overall this is a test of discipline.
in other words, are you disciplined enough to wake up @5 am everyday for months and study fora couple hours before work? are you disciplined enough to study even more after work thereby foregoing spending time with your family/kids/loved ones? are you disciplined enough to let all your hobbies go? are you disciplined enough to say goodbye to your weekends and refuse social gatherings/parties/cookouts/birthdays/weddings/etc?
if you have that level of commitment and discipline you will be fine. this test is nothing like college- i did not make the sacrifices outlined above for college. even grad school i crammed for a weekend tops for final exams. the CPA has been akin to a monthlong cram session lol.
my pace is a month/section so far for AUD/BEC/REG (FAR probs gona be 1.5months) my family/friends/coworkers pretty much all know that i am out of commission in the month leading up to the test. build a strong support network, the support of my boss has been invaluable, for example.
good luck! dont stress your GPA or “average intellignece” you'll be fine!

It's ironic you mention all the sacrifices I am already making towards getting my degree in Accounting! Sacrificing relationships, family time, social gatherings, happiness, etc etc. it has been very tough for me, but I am glad to be practicing those traits as an undergraduate. I have retained a lot of accounting information from various classes by being extremely dedicated. Many students are surprised when I can recall a complex transaction etc.I'm glad you basically describes me in your 2nd paragraph because now I know I am ready to tackle this crap. Just have to be careful and NOT BURN OUT! Thanks and keep grinding my friend!!

Are you really not an “Auditory learner”? I am terrible with retaining auditory information. However, put a book in front of me and I can memorize/work through almost anything!! Lol

I'd rather talk about VS.January 13, 2016 at 5:53 am #754701AnonymousInactive@Srowe2278 i am definitely not an auditory learner…i learn everything from a book. esp. if i read it enough times with walkthru examples anything will eventually sink in. however, put a guy talking in front of me or have me watch one of them Becker lectures and i start instayawning.
seems like you know what the exam entails and you are taking steps to undertake it- steps such as joining this forum and distracting me from studying 😉

You know you like taking breaks from studying! I'll find anything to get the hell out of my room – filling up my 3 water cups, taking out the trash, play with my dogs etc! Chronic studying does get monotonous and depressing at times. And, funny I am exactly like you with auditory learning. If someone verbally explains something to me I may not understand what they mean. The person may even think I am a little slow or strange. However, get me a book with examples and I can understand about anything! Then, we can talk about the subject or have someone explain it to me! So wierd, but you have to be book smart to be a CPA I believe!
January 13, 2016 at 6:44 am #754704AnonymousInactivei can certainly attest that being a visual learner/book smart is a must in the tax field. a big chunk of my work is reading form instructions and/or primary authority (IRC & regs)
reading the internal rev code requires 2-3 readings MINIMUM in order to understand it,and at least 5 to be even remotely proficient. it reminds me of my old calculus/linear algebra textbooks where i had to re-read stuff multiple times in order to have it sink in.

Thanks for that feedback. I have strongly considered focusing on Taxation due to my understanding of the field. Your explanation of the IRC and governing authorities (authoritative literature, etc) further reinforced my understanding. I would prefer to work alone (or in small groups), not have to travel like auditors, and much rather follow instructions/interpretations from the IRC. I believe this makes me a better candidate for Taxation, rather than auditing. Alrhough, I am a beast with debits and credits and enjoy the FS's. I enjoy my Intermediate Accounting classes more than Tax, but the working conditions for Tax employees suite my needs more than auditing. I am not good with traveling and can get a crapload of work done at the same cubicle day in and day outSorry for bugging you, but thanks again for your feedback. I'm sure you need to get back to studying!!
January 13, 2016 at 7:38 am #754706AnonymousInactivei chose tax mainly for the same reasons.
make sure you REALLY have your mind set on tax though! just as a heads up, you gotta really like tax to go into it.cuz once you;re in youre pretty much cornered into the field for LIFE, it is much harder to make a career switch- once you leave public accounting you only got corporate tax jobs to rely on. whereas after leaving a public accounting audit role ,for example, people have a LOT more options such as insurance, banking, internal audit, IT audit, finance, corp. accounting, and pretty much any corp finance role or business consulting, people like the freedom of going anywhere after public accounting.
i chose tax fully knowing that i will most likely do this for the rest of my life.,that being said- there are plenty of “exciting” (heck as exciting as tax can get) tax roles out there: international tax, SALT (might need law degree tho) estate tax,mom n pop CPA tax practice where you get to serve your communities public good and protect small businesses from uncle sam(pretty much the altruism behind the “public” in public accounting). my dream job after public is international corp tax and there's plenty of opportunity there with the repatriation of assets fiascoes we see on the news every week.
