Anyone notice that the year Obama pushes the federal gov’t to recognize same sex marriage by filing MFJ/MFS returns for those married in a state within the US is when marriage penalties hit due to Obamacare? Specifically, the additional Medicare tax of 0.9% on MFJ income above $250K, whereas the 0.9% additional tax for a single filer applies to income above $200K.

Well, that's a very small amount and it's only IF you itemize….which most people don't do if they don't own a house…. To be honest, I forgot the way Roger said it but it was something to do with cars….

Well, those who take the standard deduction are basically getting a big break, and can be looked at as double dipping if they rent.

Renter – takes standard deduction in place of R/E tax, mortgage interest, contributions, etc.

Apartment complex – deducts R/E tax, mortgage interest, etc.

Why “double dipping”?? It's not like they are cheating….Standard, by definition, is standard so it's given to everyone who files a tax return….

When I was renting my standard deduction was 5K, with itemized deduction I can deduct close to 15K, so I don't see how renting AND “double dipping” with a standard deduction was an advantage for me……..

I have 0 tax knowledge at this point. Do you pay less in taxes when you are married or not? Based on san4596 facts it looks like it can go either way for the wealthy. What about the couple making between 120 and 150 k a year?

I spoke to an ancient wise man who sent me on a mushroom induced journey through an ancient forest to find the key to passing the CPA exam. A talking spider monkey told me to throw the last of my drinking water in the dirt to find what I was looking for. So I followed his instructions and the following message appeared in the soil:

"Do 5000 multiple choice questions for each section"

Also, if your decision to marry your girlfriend depends on the tax break, you are probably with the wrong person πŸ˜‰

@ tough kitty No we are both against marriage. I am always looking for information to strengthen the case against it though;) When people hear we are both against marriage people always bring up the tax breaks. I used to be an auditor, so I haven't really had exposure to tax. By the way my girlfriend is Mexican, so not being able to read the Spanish post about us is another reminder of my failure to learn the language πŸ™
