Negotiating Faster Promotion Schedule

    Hello,

    I’ve passed all portions the CPA examination and am planning to take the CFE examination. I’ve worked in private for a number of years (6) (graduated in 2009).

    I’m currently interning at an awesome accounting firm, which I really like in a lot of ways. Normally, accounting firms provide a bonus for passing the CPA exam and obtaining the license as well as covering the cost of the exam prep material. Since I had to pay all these fees on my own ($4,000+) and I was behind many of my peers (at my age), who started in public accounting, I was wondering how likely it would be for me to negotiate a faster promotion schedule in place of the bonus I would normally obtain or obtaining some sort of extra differed compensation.

    I might be getting way ahead of myself, since the internship might not pan-out into a full-time position, but I was hoping the fact that i’ve passed the exam and will soon have a non-practicing license will help me catch up a bit.

    B=84 This exam was such a b**** that I thought I failed-don't know how these things work
    A=76 Slacker I am, I'll happily take it
    R=81 I LOVE taxes
    F=80 I don't wanna get banned for an expletive I'm thinking with "yea" proceeding it

    In my (however limited) experience, promotion schedule isn't something that is negotiated as you start a position. In theory, your industry experience and years of work experience should allow you to stand out from your entry-level peers and this would merit a faster promotion or better raise. My having the CPA completed as well as 2 years of industry accounting experience was enough for me to start at a 2nd year equivalent salary. Focus on getting the offer, then work like crazy to earn your way up the ladder. Good luck finishing out the internship!
