    Hi everyone,

Just looking for some general advise. I got my Macc, failed to get a public offer and i’ve been working as a staff in industry for a little over a year and to be honest i don’t particularly enjoy the work. I’ve had some experience in internal audit and forensics as well. I enjoyed those two experiences a lot more than being a staff accountant. I was just wondering, if I want to end up in forensics or IA, is it worth it to pursue my CPA or can I just get by with the CIA and/or CFE? what would you guys recommend?

The CPA is the most respected designation…you might be able to do what you want with the other licenses, but a CPA generally gets you paid more, and you advance faster.

In forensics, the CFF is more respected than the CFE, but you should get the CPA first. Same goes for the CIA.

I’ve got my MAcc too and I was able to make a good career without my CPA as I am only now getting licensed 12yrs into my career. I would say more importantly, I would focus on getting public accounting experience as an auditor. There is a big bias in career progression for those that have it. And yes, I definitely recommend that you pursue your CPA as it is required for most top level accounting roles, so you will eventually need it. It will also likely help you land a public job. Right now is a good time to look for a public job before you are too deep in your private career. Good luck!
