Good Interview-Bad Resume & Experiance

So a few days ago, I interviewed for an accounting internship. I was told I interviewed very well (which shocked me-but I guess I’ve been working HARD at improving my people skills), but that my experience and resume was lacking. Primarily, I worked at a small company and didn’t receive many promotions over the past few years. I graduated in 2010 (with bachelors degree), but haven’t been able to get into public accounting or a more decent role; this was one of the red-flags I was told. I’ve had over 40 interviews, easily between that time period. I honestly think this region may be super competitive.

I was also told being laid-off after tax season was another BIG red flag, after 6 months, regardless of the fact I wasn’t fired (as it’s standard industry practice to lay-off underperformers). I just received a finance position offer, which I’ve accepted (temp-to-hire).

As of now, I’ve passed the FAR section of the CPA examination, and plan to take regulation this month.

What should I being doing right now to improve my situation and get back into public? I’m thinking of networking with the auditors at my new position (as there’s a few different accounting firms) and working my a** off to boost the company’s efficiency. I want to get involved with my state’s board of accountancy, but it’s not cheap at 400$/year (maybe I need to push to volunteer harder-I’ve tried in the past). I’m also planning to crank out those 150 credit hours, but that’s not cheap either. Might try negotiating the grad-school program into my contract?

    Thanks guys.
