So i am considering switching from trying to get my CPA and going for EA. Have anyone done that, is that a mistake? I currently work for small tax firm and everyone there are EA and firm is doing very good. It seems like EA exam is much easier.

In CA non CPAs can be owners of a CPA firm as long as the majority of the firm is CPA owned. It sucks.

    AUD - 64, 80 Passed on 10/09/17

    BEC - 75 Passed on 12/09/17

    FAR - 69, 71, 73, 83 Passed on 06/10/18

    REG - 81 Passed on 09/10/17

@bigstakk from what i can tell EA makes lots of money if you are working for yourself. The owner of the firm that I work for, is extremely rich.

so… did you come here for advice or to get the answer you want to hear?
you've heard from lots of CPAs, some who are also EA's, and everyone recommends that you get the CPA for all the reasons outlined above.
Yes, you can make money working for yourself as an EA, you can have a very nice life. But you can make more money in less time with a CPA.
I was talking to an EA this year looking to sell his practice, sure he does well and makes lots of money, but my rates are higher than his and I'd ultimately have to lower my billable rate to retain his clients, or increase them to my rate and lose a fair portion of the clients… or hire someone less credentialed or less experienced to take over that workflow.
Eventually you will regret not having the CPA. Trust me, everyone does.

Please listen to Recked. I'll second everything he has said. CPA = PRESTIGE AND HIGHER BILLING RATE.

NYS Licensed CPA. 12yrs in this shit and it never gets easier!

Ricked I came to listen to other people with experience that have both CPA and EA.From everything i read here and from what i been told elsewhere unfortunately yes it appears that CPA can bill at much higher rate. The main issue that i see and maybe i am wrong about it, it can take 1-2 years to pass CPA exam plus 1 year experience. With EA 3-4 months and you get your license. For now i am working on taking FAR but at the same time i am keeping my eye on EA.

Well, I agree with everything you said there.
It is more work and takes more dedication. That's why it's worth more. If it makes you feel better get the EA first, then jump right into REG and back to the CPA exam.
Glad to hear you are continuing on the CPA journey. It'll be worth it in the end.
