So I’m one lecture in to my FAR re-study and bored out of my mind.

Just curious about the whole “conservative” image accountants seem to have. When I had a mid-life crisis and changed my career to accounting, I also got a tattoo. My tramp stamp is a shamrock on my shoulder. Maybe I should have gotten a dollar sign or a T-account.

Do you have a tattoo? What? Where?

(Jeff may delete this. It is not CPA related. Like I said, I am bored.)

I thought about a tattoo but then I realized the 4″ scar across my throat tells a much better story. I would be much happier if that scar was STRAIGHT! Instead it's crooked. It's tilted slightly up on the right side. It drives me nuts. Lines should be straight! I also realized that I'm a freaking baby when it comes to needles. I've been poked, prodded and cut so many times in the last few years, that I'm not about to volunteer for anything that involves needles. I'm afraid to sew any more!

I have one on my upper right arm. I'm into Norse mythology, so I have Thor and Jormundgandr on my shoulder. I'll probably have full sleeves on both arms by the time all is said and done, as I have the artwork I want on both arms more or less planned out.

And people say accountants are boring. 😉

I have three nautical stars on my neck. It's completely visible when I wear my hair up. It's still somewhat visible when I wear my hair down, but I don't try to hide it. It has never stopped me from getting a job. Sometimes I forget that there are employers out there that still think tattoos are taboo.

Was thinking about getting the acronyms of each of the 4 exams and put a line through each one as I passed them. Decided against it though, but still think it would be pretty cool. Didn't read entire thread, so not sure if someone else had the same idea.

I have 5 about to get another one on my wrist.

My company doesn't really care about tattoos as long as they are not offensive.

I do have 3 tats. An eagle on my chest with wing going up to shoulder, a frat tat on my left arm, and cross on my right arm. For those with visible tats, what are your career aspirations? Not judging, just wary of getting any myself because I'm afraid it won't be acceptable at higher levels in the company. If it were, I'd probably have sleeves.

I live by the motto “You wouldn't put a bumper sticker on a Maybach, so I'm not going to get a tattoo.”

For those with visible tats I'd say if you are going into industry you just need to find a company with an alternative culture (Oakley is the first to come to mind my being in southern CA). Those companies will generally not have an issue up to and including VP levels.

I see conservative companies having an issue with visible large tattoos as you move up the ladder. You might be fine as an accountant but it could cause an issue in some conservative companies on the manager and above levels….I can just see a controller saying “he/she is just not management material. Although I don't agree many of the old timers see it as unprofessional as wearing shorts and flip flops on a monday

I'd rather see a tattoo on an employee every day of the week than to see an employee in flip flops just once. But I'm old school, and I'm the boss! If people want ink, then by all means they should get it. That's a personal decision. I know that I have some clients that would be leery at first, but if you know your sh!t, then you will win over the client and the tat won't be an issue. Now that I think about it, I have four very respectable, very well off clients, that all own their own businesses, with visible tattoos.

    Like, “B A R F”?

No tattoos. I've considered getting an ironic hipster tattoo of some kind. It would have to be something related to an interest of mine that is more than fleeting. I once saw a Gonzo Pez dispenser tattoo on a Buzzfeed article that impressed me.

This tattoo quote is pretty cool, and relevant to our cause:

I'm with Kricket, if you can do the work, know what you're doing, and you're easy to get along with, I personally don't care if your tattoos are visible or not (with a few exceptions of course).

I completely agree. I just personally know so many in positions of power who dont. Try interviewing with Disney, GE, or any of these huge conservative companies with a neck tat or a teardrop and see what happens….

I know I wouldn't want to work for any of those big, nameless, faceless, greedy corporations, anyway. I got my neck tat when I was 18. That was 13 years ago. I was all, “Damn-the-man-I'll-never-conform!” Such as life would have it, bills got in the way of all that. I ended up in accounting to climb out from under a mountain of debt. Haha. Eighteen year-old me would kick 31 year-old me's ass.
