Accountants and… tattoos - Page 6

So I’m one lecture in to my FAR re-study and bored out of my mind.

Just curious about the whole “conservative” image accountants seem to have. When I had a mid-life crisis and changed my career to accounting, I also got a tattoo. My tramp stamp is a shamrock on my shoulder. Maybe I should have gotten a dollar sign or a T-account.

Do you have a tattoo? What? Where?

(Jeff may delete this. It is not CPA related. Like I said, I am bored.)

I have three tattoos. One of my family crest on my right shoulder, one on my side, and another in an undisclosed location (questionable decision). All of them are covered in a short sleeve T and shorts. I definitely want more, I think people are far more accepting of them these days. Still, I like to err on the side of caution and keep it so they're covered even in street clothes (tank tops being the exception).

“Just curious about the whole “conservative” image accountants seem to have.”

No tattoos. Just never felt compelled to get one.

But the stereotype, like many, is just plain wrong. Met so many types pf people who are considered “accountants”.

I have a nasty scar going down from my palm to 3-4 inches down my inner forearm. When I pass this exam I am getting a Japanese style dragon koi tatted up across my left forearm. Japanese legend has it that every year thousands of Koi, a courageous, strong, and dedicated fish, make a perilous and difficult journey up the Rainbow (or Dragon) river.

Out of perhaps a million Koi, only once in many years, one Koi is dedicated and strong enough to swim all the way to the head of the river, known as “The Dragon Gate” (or “The Rainbow Gate”) and leap from the water.

He is transformed into a dragon. This tattoo tells the story of this little Koi's journey. Up the inside of the collector's calf swims the determined little fish. Against all odds he reaches the head of the River and leaps from the water. Above the metaphorical Dragon's Gate of the collector's knee, the koi-fish begins his transformation mid leap, becoming a Koi-dragon, before continuing down the outside of the collector's calf as a full fledged dragon.

I have had Koi fish before and they truly posses a warrior's spirit for me this tat will represent my overcoming the difficulties of this exam and the challenges I had faced in passing it.

Seems like a cool tattoo. Random question, do people ever eat those types of fishes. I always wondered that.

@ Mayo – Not sure.. but you know that Monkey with the two symbols going – gong gong gong gong gong gong .. ( wish the admins finally let us post pics here) .. thats what the inside of my head feels like right now after reading REG since 9 AM.

@JSMI – Thanks.. not all my tat stories are as epic.. My first was when I was 16, done by and at my friends house ( prof tat artist)… a bunch of us had eaten “Mushroom” Pizza an hour before and it just kind of seemed like the right thing to do, especially that the Indian who lived in my friends closet at the time totally agreed.. damnnnn I miss those days.

I have a tribal band on my upper arm. Kind of cliche' but I like it. I have a coworker who looks and sounds like the stereotypical straight-laced, uptight CPA, but he listens to heavy metal and has several tatoos.

Tattoos look indecent to my eyes! And yet, my 2 grown up sons got theirs all over their arms and belly. I don't like it but what can a nagging Mom like me do then? LOL

Oh by the way, I got my own tattoos (even when my sons were only toddlers back then) on my eyebrows and upper eyeliner so I don't have to retouch them everyday.

    They look natural and fabulous!

I have 4 tattoos, one on my inner wrist, lower back, back of right sholder, and back of neck. Only the one on my neck (if my hair is up) and wrist (which isn't about the size of a penny) are visible regularly…

I have a tattoo, but is covered by work clothes. That's my rule. Even my husband, who is covered on his chest, back, stomach, and upper arms, makes sure to only get tattoos that cannot be seen at work, and he isn't in a corporate environment at all. I personally think that one day I could be in a CFO meeting or a Women's Business Luncheon, etc and I most certainly want people to take me for what I say and how I act, not the art I choose to put on my body. I am thinking about getting my children's names/birthdates, but not sure where to put it. Tattoos are personal IMO.

I have one on my foot, it actually covered the ugly scar i had. You can see it when i wear shoes or heels when i wear dress or shorts, but when i wear pant suit you dont see it much. I used to work i law office for years and never my lawyer or myself had a problem with that. Im glad my father was strictly against my lip and brow piercing when i was like 17 🙂
