Wanna_B_TXCPA2014ParticipantHaven’t seen one of these posts in awhile so I thought I’d start one. Took a sick day and headed to the library to buckle down for my upcoming 2/3/18 exam.
I have but 1 study goal for this weekend. MASTER CORP TAX AND SIMS!
Good luck to all those studying for exams next week

hydro94SpectatorYou can surely pass with this approach, but do you think it's quite inefficient? Unless you want to win the Elijah Sells Award, of course…

BourneParticipantI don't know why you wouldn't try to get a 100%. I guess people have different thought processes and work ethics. I have very very similar study tactics as Recked, it's only inefficient if you spend the time doing the studying then fail.

TncincyParticipantI just want to pass, I can't blame or be jealous of anyone that got greater than 75. There is no reason to put them down or try to insult. Let's keep studying so we can pass. Those that take the time to give us study points are only suggestions. If it worked for them the suggestions just might work for us. I can't tell what the intention is about studied too hard or inefficient, but the Elijah Sells award is for those who can pass with high scores. Most of us won't get that award, but we can get a 75. I know I'm coming in on the end.

hydro94Spectator@anyatver: No I'm not saying you should only aim for 75. My point is that studying over 100 hours something just for one section is way too much and can be inefficient.

turo9992000ParticipantHow many hours should we study to get a 75?
February 11, 2018 at 11:21 pm #1711630
SandyParticipantWorking through FAR pension section right now.
Trying to figure out all the related JE.
I didn't take notes when preparing BEC exam.
However, I took handwritten notes while preparing REG exam. ( finding it helpful)
I did the same thing while preparing FAR exam.I believe trying our best to get highest score as possible.
If you are studying with the attitude of “75”, you probably wouldn't try to understand the concepts and basics and try to figure out why MCQs/ SIMs were answered wrong.
And you probably would wonder why you couldn't pass the exams while others can.February 12, 2018 at 9:12 am #1711750
ReckedParticipantInefficient use of time would be having to take one of these tests more than once.
One time is more than enough for me. If I knew the numbers of hours to guarantee me a 75 I would do exactly that.
With my equity position on the line, I'm hedging my bets. Both the Wiley and Gleim courses recommend over 150 hours per part. I think 180 for FAR from Wiley. And 160 for Gleim.
FAR was my first and I had no idea what to expect, other than the horror stories I had heard, so I went above and beyond.February 12, 2018 at 9:49 am #1711789
TncincyParticipantI don't think I clocked my hours but my mistake was being too random. I wasn't sure if I should start at the first page of the book or start with mcq's and work backward. I feel more backward with less security about passing. So, how do I make myself read the book! I have wiley book and ninja. I have a little more than 20 days and I still feel like I'm missing something.

J KingParticipantThanks @reckedracing, I just jotted down your MCQ tips. So to clarify things, only do 1-2 practice exams during final review week/s? then do small blocks of MCQ as you review a chapter? I just got started doing Gleim TB yesterday. I'd say I'm impressed with how clean its interface looks.
@tncincy, start a chapter, skim through pages to get an idea how bulky the chapter is, then read first and last sentences of each paragraph. More tips here.February 12, 2018 at 12:22 pm #1711942
ReckedParticipantI only did full length practice exams for FAR. I did one exam with Roger, and then I did a couple practice MCQs block sessions in Gleim to gauge my time.
I did NOT do any practice exams for REG or AUD, and will not do one for BEC. The practice exams are a waste of time. If you do poorly it shakes your confidence.
No review course I have tried comes close to the actual SIMs, so why bother wasting time with them on the practice exams. In the review stage you should be doing MCQs with immediate answers, or do 10 question blocks so you can review/learn asap.
If you have Gleim use the Test Prep with show answers immediately. If you get one wrong, read why it was wrong, then try to pick the right one.
I can usually limit my options to 2 choices. If I get it wrong its usually the second option. Rarely I will select 3 wrong answer before getting the right one. 3 wrongs = 3 learning chances.
Selecting the correct answer does not alter your score for that session, so the data analytics are still accurate. That's what works best for me, your learning style may be different.

AnonymousInactive@Tncincy-Here is what I did for all mine, perhaps it would work? I would listen to Becker lectures on the way to work, then I would jump into MCQ for a particular module, then I would go back through the book and take notes (sometimes I would listen to explanations if something wasn't clear), then redo the MCQ and move on. If you feel like you have already been exposed to the material enough-jump into MCQ and go from there. On my re-take I did all of Ninja questions, then went back to Becker and my notes, to re-write my own notes and skim through the book to see what else was worth writing down. Then I re-did all of the Ninja questions I got wrong. Then I went to Becker SIMS, and did random sets of MCQ in Becker and Ninja while doing more SIMS. SIMS and journal entries is where I lived the last couple of days and I really think it made a difference. Once you understand the mechanics of a journal entry, you feel like you know the material so much better. We will see if this technique translates into a pass. I feel nothing at all after this test-maybe that's a good sign?

TncincyParticipantI appreciate the help gang. I can follow this. I don't have becker I have ninja plus, I have gone through the most important ones like bonds, investments, governmental, and a few others. I do have the ninja book and the wiley book. so I can skim through the chapters before starting mcq's. What I was surprised about after yesterdays study, I knew more about governmental and not for profit than I though. according to ninja I need a little more work on cash flows and bonds and financial statements (mostly calculations). I have printed off the suggestions of anyatver, jking reckedracing. I really appreciate you all and your patience. keep those fingers crossed, I'm not giving up. Thanks again Ninja's.

TncincyParticipantI'll take advantage of power weekend, and far retake posts as much as possible. I'm not going down with out a fight. (that's for me). I might feel like i'm talking to myself in these posts, but hey what are we here for if we can't encourage one another to pass.
