@jack authoritative literature. It's the IRC that you search on the research question of the SIMS. Many people go through it for other sims beyond the research question to see if they can use it as a cheat sheet.

@re2pect trust me I know all too well. 5th time sitting for this F*ng thing! I cannot stand the SIMS! People should not fail because they don't understand what they are wanting/asking. People should fail because they don't know the material. Also, if there are areas that the examiners find important then maybe they should relay that to the prep courses so they can adjust their material appropriately. Failing because every single prep course brushed over a topic and barely touched up on it is not fair either. Are we supposed to blindly go around studying sh*t that isn't in our prep material????!! Ok I'm done now!

@dtatham10- I went through it with BEC. My first two exams were filled with a bunch of random IT crap that was never mentioned in any review course. I read through the IT chapters of four different courses for my first retake so nobody could tell me I wasn't prepared for it. That's why this exam is just as much about luck as it is being prepared. Some people might get lucky and get sims that play to their strengths or aren't on such random topics while others can get screwed and get a couple sims that were mentioned in one paragraph of a chapter you didn't even think would be that important.

@re2pect completely agree. You still have those people who no matter what exam you throw at them they are going to ace, but for the majority of us luck plays a huge part. I can say without question I know the REG material better then any other exam…but which exam am I still trying to pass??? That's what's so frustrating. I went into BEC the first time slacking off and passed. 2 weeks till my REG exam here's to hoping I can cover all the little topics that can possibly get thrown my way!

dtatham10- Other than AUD, I feel most comfortable with the REG material and actually like studying for it more than any other exam. If I can't pass it after studying almost 5 months straight, I don't know if I ever will lol.

@re2pct based on your experience last time I think you have a good shot. Not doing any of the sims and scoring a 68 is pretty insane lol

So basically what you guys are saying is practicing the SIMs won't even help lol. I am supposed to take REG on Saturday but I want to push it back again. I haven't taken an exam since September so I am just stressing myself out because I am trying to know this material 100%.

It's so difficult though – I have C Corp, S Corp, Partnership and Individual Tax down pretty pat, as well as Property. Trying to understand Gift, Estate tax and AMT better these next few days, as well as keep Business Law and Ethics straight in my head. So much pressure to pass before the changes. I know you never feel confident, but man, this stuff is impossible to remember!

I am using both Wiley and Ninja…I have been working through all the SIMs. But they are nothing like what I will see on the exam? Already feel defeated ugh. I want to sacrifice something to the CPA Gods.

@tardis lol sorry I went on a serious rant earlier. No I'm not saying, don't bother studying. Going through wiley and ninja sims will help–doing multiple choice will help. All we are trying to say is there has been many people who get thrown off by the sims. I'm not sure I have a great answer on how to prepare for them (hell I obviously haven't figure it out). Just keep studying and try you best to stay calm, stress is not going to help you come exam day. Good luck!

@dtatham10- Who knows if I was just a lucky guesser that day for the mcq's lol. If the practice sims are any indication of the exam, you can actually get some credit just by putting 0's for all the answers.

@Tardis_Wobble- I would definitely practice as many sims as you can. They test how well you know a topic in a different way than just doing countless mcq's. How do you like the sims for Wiley? I thought of purchasing it for more practice, but might just renew my ninja subscription.

@re2pect must have been. Isn't the weight 60-40 MCQs/Sims…that would mean you basically aced the mcq's and got a decent amount of credit for the 0's you inputted on the sims.

@dtatham10- Whatever it was, I can't expect that same outcome next time lol. We've come to far to let the sims defeat us! Hopefully Gleim was what we needed to push us over the top.

Yeah I would agree with both you guys about the SIMs. I hate them, but they definitely reinforce the concepts. @re2pect – so I signed up for a free trial of Wiley for two weeks! Definitely got my money's worth I think. I like the wiley sims more than Ninja, and I definitely found them difficult but more similar to the actual exam. There is a lot of overlap between the Wiley and ninja mcq.

My issue now is being so worried about the random B-Law as well…I feel like I should mainly focus on tax but it is Brutal when you get to the exam and see an “easy” question and if you would have just studied that section for like an extra hour you would have gotten it!

But man do I agree with the venting. I hate it! I don't want another retake. I've retaken every exam, but I haven't yet taken REG. Retakes I at least kind of know what to expect, here I am going in completley blind. But I just hate the whole process so much. You can spend 45 hours studying a subject relentlessly because you just know it will be on the exam in a bunch of MCQ's and at least one SIM. And then you take the exam and there is one question on it. Bahhhh!!

So nerve racking. I don't want to take the exam in the new format :/

Since you guys have taken it before, do you think I should really focus on all the return dates? It's little stuff like that that is stressing me out for some reason. It's just impossible to know it all, but giving it your “best” doesn't always equate to a pass. Wishing you two both luck. Last one!!!

@Tardis_Wobble- The Wiley free trial gives you access to the whole test bank and the sims? I think I tried it last year when I was deciding between them and Roger but don't remember having access to everything.

It's easy to get overwhelmed with all the details, but I would try and memorize all the due dates. I remember seeing it as either a sim on the aicpa practice exam or it was one of the previously released sims from last year.

Don't overlook blaw and ethics. They're collectively almost 40% of the exam and take up a large chunk of the mcq's.
