i came across with a crazy formula regarding gift tax exclusion.

Say if someone give you a gift and that someone also pay gift tax for that, what is the basis of the gift you recreived.

Normally for gift is just carry over basis carry over holding period….but not the case if someone pay the gift tax….Do I have memorise that crazy formula?

Anoyone using becker, or any other program for that matter, do ya'll think the Tax Credit section is a little slim on the MCQ? I find some of the details in the credits to be challenging to remember and Becker only has like 7 or so questions for the whole chapter on Credits.

I wanted to know if anyone was wondering the same, or if the other review courses had more questions on credits? I don't want to spend a ton of time trying to remember all the details if I don't have to but I also don't want to be underprepared on the topic.

Rita Spano is an active participant in a company retirement plan. Her husband, John, age 45, works for a company that does not have a retirement plan. The Spanos' joint adjusted gross income for 2014 is $185,000. John contributes $4,000 to an IRA for himself. How much of this $4,000 contribution for John can the Spanos deduct on their 2014 joint return?

    A.

    $4,000

    B.

    $3,200

    C.

    $2,000

    D.

    $0

    Explanation is:

Beginning in 1998, individuals are not considered participants in a company retirement plan simply because their spouses are. However, the maximum deductible IRA contribution for a nonparticipant spouse is phased out for couples with joint return adjusted gross incomes between $181,000 and $191,000. In this case, the Spanos' AGI is $4,000 over the beginning of the $10,000 phaseout range so their maximum $4,000 deduction is reduced by $800 ($4,000 × 2 ÷ 10) to arrive at $3,200.

Could someone explain how they're getting the $800 subtraction. Why are they dividing by 10, for instance? Thanks.

Green is self-employed as a human resources consultant and reports on the cash basis for income tax purposes. Select the appropriate tax treatment on Form 1040 (U.S. Individual Income Tax Return) for personal life insurance premiums paid by Green.

    A.

Fully deductible on Form 1040 to arrive at adjusted gross income

    B.

Reported in Schedule A, Itemized Deductions (deductibility subject to threshold of 7.5% of adjusted gross income)

    C.

Reported in Schedule A, Itemized Deductions (deductibility subject to threshold of 2% of adjusted gross income)

    Correct D.

    Not deductible

I though 100% of self-employed health insurance premiums were deductible?
