Beharris17MemberThis might seem like a really crazy idea, but I found this helpful when I started studying last night. Whenever I got to a section that was extremely boring, or I didn't understand. I would record myself reading the topic, and play it back over and over, until I understood the concept. Then I would simplify what I read and it really helped me last night. It was like I was teaching myself! Wanted to pass this along to anyone looking for “creative” ways to get through the material.
LETS GET IT DONE Q1!

AnonymousInactiveSitting for REG again in the begin of Jan! Ready to get this beast knocked out so I can focus on something else! Using Becker Self Study and trying to finish up R# homework right now.
I havent purchased any Ninja materials yet. Thinking about getting either the 10 point combo or just the MCQs. Thoughts on both? I made a 74 on my last attempt, so I've very close. (Not that the last attempt counts for anything…as we all start back at 0.)

wmcpaMemberI just completed my application to get a coupon to get a NTS today! phew! I hope it doesn't take more than a few days this time to get the NTS. I'm aiming for mid-Jan to end of Jan to take it. I work (2) jobs, and end of the year and beginning of year is crazy work schedule!! I thought hard about taking BEC at end of Feb like cpamomma suggested – and I really would love to – but I don't think it's possible now that i'll be moving too! At least i won't have to contend with 2 hour roundtrip commutes soon! While I could listen to audio, I'm more a visual learner to begin with. As an emphasis later, I do listen to audio.
@Beharris – that's what I usually do for regular college courses. I find that when *I* lecture, I have to know what I'm talking about. This enables me to figure out what I really don't know. I used to talk to myself all the time – tape recorder, but I got overwhelmed. This time – I will focus on outlines for the finish.
I'm not sure about the whole ten point combo- I just indulged, because I don't want to take any more chances. I'm using Becker too. I do like most of the lectures.
Like you @Gabe – I thought AMT was not well explained in Becker. There's just so much material to cover for the instructors. I had to keep reworking them both corp and individual. Check out this guy's videos.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vJ5NKtjcKw He has more (free) online. He seems to resemble Roger a lot in the mannerism. I heard about the miles guy through this forum a few days back..and indulged in a couple of his lectures before I found out I failed REG. I like the way he explains things and translates them into tax forms. I plan on printing and writing on them just so I can see how all of the different schedules are linked (visually). Becker already has them printed out in the books, but I really want to use them several times.

AnonymousInactiveNight question. 🙂
Richard and Alice Kelley lived apart during 2014 and did not file a joint tax return for the year. Under the terms of the written separation agreement they signed on July 1, 2014, Richard was required to pay Alice $1,500 per month, of which $600 was designated as child support. He made six such payments in 2014. Additionally, Richard paid Alice $1,200 per month for the first 6 months of 2014, no portion of which was designated as child support. Assuming that Alice has no other income, her return for 2014 should show gross income of
A. $10,800
B. $5,400
C. $0
D. $12,600

AnonymousInactive@BeautifulNim: Answer is A?
December 11, 2014 at 5:44 am #651160
AnonymousInactiveHi!
It is B, and by the way I posted it because I got it wrong too…reading error on my part which is my common problem.
Answer (B) is correct.
The IRC requires the recipient of cash payments made pursuant to a written separation agreement to include these payments in gross income if they do not live together and if the payments are not required after the death of the recipient spouse. If the agreement specifies that a fixed portion is for support of a minor child, then that portion is excluded from gross income. Since $600 was specifically designated as child support, only $900 ($1,500 – $600) of each monthly payment is included in Alice’s gross income for a total of $5,400 ($900 × 6 months). The $1,200 per month paid for the first 6 months of the year is not included in Alice’s gross income since these payments were made before the written separation agreement.

AnonymousInactiveOpps, 6 months only. It should be $5,400 only.
December 11, 2014 at 5:48 am #651162
AnonymousInactiveYou got it!
