As the site says I got a 71 on REG….lost BEC. On a huge time crunch to get both done. I find re-studying for a section harder than a new one and I don’t know it’s starting all over again even if my head says says you know most of it. Clearly I don’t enough for a 75. Looks like simulations are what brought me down. I practiced SIMs but what I got was not on any of those topics or one a tax topic I was familiar enough with (obscure). It got a lot of stronger and some comparables in everything else.

Any advice from re-takers? If anyone has tried to pass REG and a lost section any advice is appreciated.

I failed in July and I am retaking in November. Plans to start studying again in two weeks since things have finally calmed down with my schedule. I am starting from scratch with a new test bank and taking more notes and making sure I go through all the flashcards (Becker and Ninja) for everything. I will be practicing SIMS this time. They were brutal!!!

CPA Exam - Finally DONE (November 2014)
    BEC (08/10/13) 80
    AUD (08/24/13) 65 (11/13/13) 85
    FAR (04/12/14) 81
    REG (07/19/14) 69 (11/29/14) 87!!

I'm in the same situation as most in here. Missed it by a point. I'm diving back in immediately while some of the info is still fresh on my brain. I'm re-writing all my notes. Next will be a practice exam to gauge my weak areas. Then slamming MCQ and SIMs. Although I plan on getting a handle on some of the things I know I struggled with, I still plan on reviewing all of the material. I'm shooting for the first week of October.

    @ Kappa:

On my retest, I felt like I knew the material, so I went straight to Wiley Test Bank (TB) and focused on getting my scores above 85% on all of the subject categories.

    1. I did approximately 2,000 questions in the TB.

    2. I divided my notebook into sections based on the TB subject categories.

    3. If I got a question wrong, I wrote the question and answer in the notebook.

    4. All of the questions I got wrong in the TB for a given session, the next morning or evening I would begin by reading my notes for those questions and do that group of questions again. If I got an answer in that group wrong, I highlighted it as obviously I don't understand that concept or remember that fact.

    5. As you go about this process you will notice some areas need a lot more work than others. Focus on the areas that you need more work and mix in the areas you are strong in.

    6. I did less than half of the simulations in the TB.

    7. In the last 2-3 days of studying I read and re-read my notebook. I also read the Ninja Notes and took Jeff's advice in re-writing those notes and mine. I re-wrote as much as I could, and re-read the rest.

    8. I utilized the tax code research module for my SIMs. That gave me the answers I needed on at least 3 questions.

    9. Listen to MP3 audio as much as possible, especially in the car.

    10. I loaded Ninja Blitz videos on my iPad. I watched all of them at least once. Some I watched 3 times and I watched a few of them in the final days of prep. They are short videos and help keep all the material fresh.

I spent some time in CPA Excel reviewing topics that I had trouble on, mainly in the law areas.

On a final note, I should have been better aware of the pretest SIM question. In hindsight I knew which one it was, and I spent more time on that question than I did on the rest and I ended up guessing on all of it anyway. I should have identified that from the start and probably not wasted any time on it. I skipped to the SIMs that I felt most comfortable on and did them in that order.

For REG, I just went over all the MC questions that I had trouble on and also made sure I knew every part of the sims. I also took a different approach on the sims…I actually put in my formulas and it seemed to have helped! Maybe some numbers were wrong but I got partial because I showed them my calculation? Anyway, I got an 85.

    Just food for thought…

    BEC - 75
    AUD - 77
    REG - 85
    FAR - 78

@DanVerona89 I totally agree I am not counting on any previous knowledge to carry me through. I'm re-setting my questions and starting over. I work late in accounting so it's pretty much home by 7, start studying at 7:30 or 8 till 1am or so.

I used Wiley and got the Ninja questions to supplement. I will use Ninja and also Gleim to get some “fresh” questions. I'm good about notes, re-writing, and my multiple choice was all good (Stronger). It's SIMS that were out there and nothing like the ones I did practice which is where I got “weaker” =(

I too am not sure what the best strategy is time wise. Should I study for REG and take it in early Oct, giving me 1 month or should I study both and take them in Nov? I feel like I may bet burnt out and jumbled up if I try to do both. But, I don't want to short myself on time for REG….ugh this is so hard.

I'm gonna try and take it first week of Oct which will give me a little over 3 weeks to study. I have read of some people who took the retake that quick and passed but also read that some people did worse. I'm hoping I didn't forget too much in that week off.

    AUD - 75 ☺
    FAR - 65, 71, 70, 77 ☺
    BEC - 80 ☺
    REG - 73, 66, 79 ☺ 2/28/15

    Done!

If you have AUD and BEC scheduled for early Oct. and Nov….when would you suggest to retake REG? Also got a score in the high 60s…really unfortunate.

I got a 69 on my exam. What's up with all these high 60 scores? At least I feel like I'm not the only one ha.

Everything is still so fresh in my head. My plan is to tackle the retake by going into intense review mode. Going over my notes, becker book on topics I'm shaky on, and then non-stop MCQ. One thing I am going to emphasize this time around is practicing more SIMS. even though I felt like mine weren't terrible on the exam.

The only question now is when to take it? October 3rd time frame or around Oct 11th? A little over three weeks seems too soon, and a little over 4 weeks sounds just right. I dont know though.

I was curious DiscoStu on what you got since you said your experience was similar to mine. I too failed with a 74, super bummed at how close that is but optimistic that I have two more shots at Reg until Bec drops off. I'm not sweating yet, unless I fail the next crack!

My main focus is going to be Property & Entity taxation, and Business law (weak spots). And just to review the other areas. I hope luck gets thrown my direction and I don't get sims that are ridiculous. Even after searching for the answer to one of them, I still cannot find. It doesn't make sense, and seems basic information needed to solve the sim was left out. Oh well, on to the next.

You are already in the system so you can be very flexible with signing up for tests. You will basically get your NTS and be able to schedule a test within 2-3 days so, I would go for one test at a time. Sure shoot for REG early october but I literally did not bother schedule my REG test until I almost finished studying. I basically studied to the point where I was like yeah.. i'm def gunna pass now and then scheduled the test for like 1 week from that day and did nothing but continuous mcq and sim review until test day.

Go for one test at a time but if you arent gunna make early october, no sweat, schedule for 1 or 2 weeks into october. Focus on just one test at a time, go all out and knock it down. if Reg gets knocked out mid to late Oct, no big deal, just adjust and assess your BEC timeline from that point

I basically schedule like this to avoid the reschedule exam fee but it works and it keeps the pressure off which helps you focus. You take it when your ready, be flexible with when you are ready.

    Good luck!
