Uhmmm… I just read something I hope doesnt show poorly on the exam I took last week…

Does flagging questions affect the grade at all?

I was using the flags as a way to indicate to myself that I did the question… In other words, if I did the question, then I activated the flag… so – by the time each testlet was done – all the flags were activated…

I’d say the first two testlets were easy enough, but the third one was harder… and then the sims were like totally hard… Actually, if I had to predict a pass fail, then I’d say I would have passed based upon the MC questions, but my performance on the Sims were likely to result in a fail… I guess it depends on how they weight the questions and curb the exam, but (out of six sims) the I’m pretty sure I blew two of the important ones…

Anyway, I’m more concerned with whether the flags effect the grade or something…

I don't think the flags have anything at all to do with your grade. The answers are what they care about.

    FAR - 92 (4/27/12)
    AUD - 96 (7/17/12)
    BEC - 92 (8/30/12)

That's just a rumor that has been going around but it's in no way true. The flags are simply a tool. That would be like saying you get penalized for using the spreadsheet function. They are all simply tools to help you complete the test.

    FAR: 85
    AUD: 80
    REG: 78
    BEC: 82

Flags don't affect the score. They're just there for your benefit.

The question might seem out of left field but I think a review instructor was telling people not to flag because it might tell the AICPA that you don't know it.

That review instructor should be shot for being an idiot. [Please tell me you were not referring to yourself in the third person.]

I agree with minimorty, any instructor who believes flagging questions can affect your scores is a little crazy and/or stupid. The exams are not human graded unless you are up for second review. Additionally, the solution to the question is correct regardless of anything you do or know. That is the case unless a question is contested successfully by a candidate. Therefore, logically, flagging a question can have no impact on your score since your score is based on how many correct answers you have and not what is going on in your head. Unless we're living in some kind of Ghost in the Shell or Matrix world, that's a totally different story.

I sincerely doubt that flagging a question will impact a person's score. That being said, there's nothing stopping the examiners from gathering statistics on questions that have been flagged, perhaps for use in designing future versions of the exam. But we'll likely never know.
