The “grandfathering” in basically means that they are giving you the designation based on your experience in the past and not on a the requirements that will be in place for the newer candidates. In a few years (2015 i think), they will end up putting in place a rigorous exam and other qualification standards. Since we will already have the designation (assuming we elect it) then we will not be subject to the exams. So we are getting the designation and all we have to do is pay the $150. I can see how the certified management accountants (CMA) would be pretty upset by this new designation.

So were like CITP and PFS designations freebies in the past too? I am sticking with CPA/CGMA because I don't want to take the exam in 2015, and want to add it to my professional arsenal. Its a no brainer to take advantage of it now.We my friends are very fortunate!

One of my coworkers is kicking himself for not picking up a Certified Government Financial Manager designation when he could have been grandfathered in; now it's test-based and, he says, viewed pretty highly in the federal sector. So I agree the CGMA is a no brainer if you have the work experience.

While lurking around yesterday after being away awhile, I saw the CGMA discussion & went to find out more info about it. 5 minutes later (3 of which were spent trying to recover my AICPA password) & Congrats, you're a CGMA. Huh? Will I ever use it? I have to figure out what it is first. Will I put it after my name? Only to people that have no idea what it is & might be impressed by more letters after CPA. I am afraid if I use it to other CPA's they might actually frown upon it that I am trying to emphasize something that wasn't really earned. After 2015 when it is tested? Probably would be better regarded.

@brla – Thanks for sharing. I am still unsure. I'm afraid it's going to take away the focus from my other designations (business valuation and divorce). I am not a management accountant, so I'm not sure what the benefit would be.

hey guys – I just found out I passed my last section last night, but am totally lost on the next steps in the process. I know there should be some forms I need to fill out as well as getting my work experience signed off on, do they mail these out to us after passing, or is there some place I can go online to get them? I applied under Georgia and have been looking on their website, but I just can't find anything too useful/helpful. Any help will be much appreciated!!! thanks!! 🙂

    Hey Guys,

It feels great to finally pass over to the other side, and become an alumni !

anyways, now that i'm done with the actual exams, i was wondering if anyone has actually gone through with the process of getting either a certificate or a full fledged CPA without any accounting experience. if so, which state did you do at and how did you do it? i think i have 150 credits when combining my B.S and my credits from law school….

any information would be greatly appreciated!!

    thx

    Congrats to the new alumni!!

Lawboy that may be a very tall order! In MA you can get the designation without experience but only if you have a graduate level degree.

    Welcome new alumni!

I really hope that you CANT get a CPA license without some sort of experience. No offense to anyone in particular.

    Hello! A new alumni here!

Just one question… On my NASBA account, my passing REG score has been applied, but all 4 sections still have expiration dates. Is this normal?
