@herbie – If you are starting your own business, I suggest you get your own domain with email service. GoDaddy is a great service for this. Assuming you put Herbie, CPA on your business card, having the CPA domain seems redundant. People already know you are a CPA because of your name.

I guess it would come in handy if you just wanna brag a little more about being a CPA. It's kinda cool because only CPAs can use it. I may or may not get one after I get my license. My Gmail seems to be working just fine.

@mla1169 – Not everyone needs an AICPA membership. I haven't signed up and I probably won't for some time. Neither my boss or his boss (controller and CFO) are AICPA members. I would have signed up if I thought my company would pay for it, but since they aren't members, I kind of doubt they would authorize my company to pay for my membership. And on a personal financial level, I have other things to spend money on that are a higher priority than an AICPA membership that I don't actually need right now.

I looked at the AICPA membership benefits and I didn't feel like it was worth the money. I'm sure that there are those that feel differently; I'm just saying that not every CPA signs up for AICPA membership, so don't feel like you are obligated to do it.

Thanks for the feedback. I haven't looked into it at all (frankly I don't care about anything at all except finally getting my license)

I didn't want to rejoin the AICPA after passing the exam. They had been the bane of my existence for the past 2 years.

After attending a state accountancy board meeting with local CPAs the other day, I learned that if you are not a member of the AICPA, then it is perceived to be a bad thing. Joining gives us credibility amongst our peers and the the public. So I came home and signed back up with the AICPA.

I need to get my experience requirement and having “AICPA member” on my resume can't hurt.

It still killed me to send them more money.

Interesting discussion. There is a no-test window for AICPA members to sign on for Chartered Global Management Accountant designation. I had a discount code from AICPA, so I just did both. I have buckets of strategic planning, performance measurement metrics, lean six sigma, etc. experience, so I I just followed the self-certification process on the website.

Diane, thanks for info! I'm now a CPA & CGMA LOL…seems like anyone with a CPA, active aicpa membership, and 3 years work experience qualifies

Anyone else kinda get the sense that this CGMA designation is sort of sham? It seems a bit ridiculous that all you need is a few years of experience in practically any kind of business setting to get the designation. No test, no management experience, nothing. Is it just another revenue generator for the AICPA?

There is quite a bit of controversy about the creation of this designation, which is the result of a partnership of the AICPA and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, especially the grandfather provision. The Institute of Management Accountants, which provides Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designations, is none too pleased. I think only time will tell if it is ultimately a valuable credential.

    First post.

Question – my recent score notification and my Nasba.org profile show all of my expiration dates even though I passed all in 12 months – is that normal?

@Justin – congrats on getting through the exams. I see Becker let you down with that 96. Lol.

Don't worry about the expiration dates. You passed. They aren't going to take it back.

Ya it seems like a bandwagon type thing. I'm an aicpa fan boy 🙂
