I passed all four sections of the CPA exam in NY in early 2012. I started my work experience under a licensed CPA on December 3, 2012. So, I just hit the one-year mark. Should I ask my employer to fill out the work experience form (Form 4B) NOW or is it too soon? If it’s too soon, then how long should I wait?

Please advise. Thanks.

I asked and received my sign off the day after I hit the 1 year mark of work experience under my current controller and put it in the mail the same day. You never know what will happen in the future… I worked under a CPA when I first started working in industry after I graduated and when I went back to ask for the sign off after I had already left the company, my old supervisor said “Oh, I don't think I was a CPA then” which was such a lie because I confirmed it online but just took it in stride…my time will come soon enough 🙂

I would do it right when you hit the 1 year mark. It's to their benefit to have you complete it.

A related question though, can the experience come from under 2 different CPAs at different firms?

@Ntw6817 In California it can. Different CPAs, non-consecutive months… all allowed.

This may be an obviously dumb question….but where do you get these forms? I asked my old employer if they would sign the work experience form six months ago and they said ‘no problem” and to let them know when I get the application. Do they come with the application and your “congratulations letter”? Do you down load them from the internet (I've search ILBOE.org)? Do CPA firms have a stack in a folder in some dusty drawer in the archive room?

I'm in IL – any insights?

To be honest, I'm scared to death that my boss will say no. Not that I did anything wrong, but my boss isn't very easygoing, he's short-tempered, and irritable. We'll see how it goes. I just hope I didn't put in this one year for nothing.

cpaman: I read that to mean that it is to their benefit to have you complete the work experience and become a licensed CPA on their staff. Also, you are NOT asking for a favor… you worked for them for a year and now you have earned this. They are doing what they are supposed to do!! Bosses can be jerks sometimes….I would just go by his office, knock on the door, and say “Could you please take a moment to complete this form for my CPA licensing application?” Smile and tell him to leave it in your mailbox. He will be happy to do it even if he frowns at you.

@Baxter- I think the form needs to be mailed directly by the employer. At least, that's the way it is in NY
