Transferring License vs. Transferring Credit

Has anyone ever transferred their CPA license to a different state and/or transferred their CPA credit to a different state?
What happens when the date at which your first credit expires differs between the two states? If you transfer your credit, will the expiration date to pass change to the new state’s requirements? If you instead pass all four parts within the 18 month roll, apply for the license in your original home state and then apply for the reciprocal license in your new home state, will your new home state deny you because you didn’t pass all four parts within the time frame of the new state’s requirements? Or do they just care that you passed all four parts within an 18 month rolling period?

I had to transfer my BEC and FAR credits from Kansas to Washington. Until today I didn't know there would be any problems.

Kansas counts the 18 months from the last day of the month when you passed regardless of when you sat. For example, I sat for FAR on 2/2/2017 and my credit expired on 8/31/2018.

Washington counts the 18 months from the day you pass. However, on CPA Central my FAR credit has always expired on 8/31/2018 – even after Washington accepted my transfer credits.

When scheduling my final AUD exam (passed Q3) I sent an email asking about the delayed score release and my expiring credit. I was told as long as I sat before the expiration I would be fine. So I sat 8/18/2018. I looked at CPA Cental at the end of August and my FAR credit still said credit and AUD said Attendance.

This morning, AUD said credit and score received 9/11/2018 and FAR said lost credit. So that prompted me to look into all of the dates and I think I'm fine because Washington accepted the transfer as 8/31/2018. I called 1-800-CPA-EXAM this morning and gave them my jurisdiction ID as Washington and they said it's a system glitch and should be fixed tomorrow. However, it is giving me a fair amount of anxiety so we will see what tomorrow brings.

I would recommend calling the states you are transferring to/from and ask them directly. I had a lot of issues with communication with the Washington coordinator so I've been flying blind and am afraid that now it's going to bite me in the behind even though I did as instructed at the time. Transferring hasnt been a great experience for me for sure.

    BEC - 78 (Lost Credit), 83

    AUD - 63, 74, 69, 79

    REG - 59, 74, 72, 78

    FAR - 75

I think all the states have an 18 month window for passing the exam.

A few months ago I was looking into the issues if my wife got a new job in Ohio and we had to move after I completed the license. I think the only things would have been since Ohio requires an ethics test and Indiana doesn't I would have to pass the ethics test, and if the CPE or work experience requirements are different you would need to be in compliance with the new state's requirements before transferring the license.

18 month window, yes. Same start date for the expiration clock, no.

@Jdub Thank you!! That is exactly the scenario I am in. I want to transfer NY to CT but the NY credit expires on the date that the testing section closed when I took the exam but CT expires on the date that I took the exam – which was a whole two months earlier. I'm scared if I transfer NY to CT that I will lose the NY expiration date which allows me two extra months. I only have one exam left, I'm debating whether it would be better for me to just wait and transfer the license instead of the credits…

I've had this same concern about switching to another state. Definitely wait until you are licensed in whatever state that you originally applied to. You are able to meet the experience requirements whatever state you are in. Then, once you have received your official license, apply to the state board that you are moving to. Trust me, I have called many state board reps and they have told me this over and over! Hope this helps.

I definitely would not have transferred and actually tried not to but Kansas has a residency requirement I no longer met. I appealed for an exception that my husband is active duty military and Kansas was my home of record and they didn't care and wouldn't issue me an NTS so I had to switch.

With switching the administrative process for me has been an absolute nightmare. So if you continue to meet the requirements of the state you are in I would just stay put!

@Jdub – okay thanks for the input. NY doesn't require residency as far as I know so I think I'm good. I will apply for the license and then apply for reciprocal in CT.

    @YouCanDoIt
    – NY expires 18 months from the end of the non-testing window of when you took your first exam – so if you took the exam mid July, the 18 months would start from Sept 30th. Since that is the end of that sections non-testing window. It's a lot more time than other states are giving. And a lot more logical of a standard considering we have to wait until the end of the testing window to get our scores now.
