Anyone have a PMP certification or taking the PMP exam? I’m looking at getting that on the side (through work). Is it true you can either use real-life projects for the required hours OR class hours of exam prep? I also saw the exam was 4 hours and 200 MCQs. After the CPA, I’m pretty sure I can handle any sort of testing. Any advice would be appreciated.

The Veterans Technology Program is underwritten in its entirety by JPMorgan Chase & Co. It is free of charge to all admitted veterans and military personnel, who have served on active duty post 9/11/01.

How is the studying going for anyone taking the PMP Exam soon? I know it's 200 MCQs so it should be a breeze to prepare for compared to the CPA exam. I've heard it's hard, but I can't imagine it being harder than the CPA. Any opinions?

I'm currently studying for the PMP (exam date: 4/27/2012) – I took a PMP practice test and it is not as tricky as the CPA but it is not easy either. A few calculations, heavy on concepts and principles.

Congrats jjim1181. Mind sharing some experiences? How long did it take you to study? Did you use the boot camp program to study?

    @jjm1181 What was your score?

    What were your study tips?

I'm glad Wiley has a PMP Test Bank 🙂

So I did a 4 day boot camp offered by Becker. It got me the 35 pdu hours needed to sit for the exam. I also bought a study guide that included audio CDs by esi international. I drive an hour each way to work and I listened to the CDs everyday which really helped. That was my story for success on the CPA too. I only studied about 4 weeks. I memorized all the formulas which weren't that many but I saw a bunch of questions on them. I was told to memorize the chart of processes and knowledge areas but I just mAde sure I understood them logically and knew the big ones ie charter, etc. I definitely missed the Wiley Test Bank when studying. I didn't do a lo of mcqs cause in my study guide they were long and wordy. I just read an hour a day of my study guide, 2 hours of audio CDs and crammed the week before. During the test there were some easy questions and some that we're just hard. 200 mcqs is a marathon and while you should be fine on time, i definitely hit that wall around question 125. You only get pass or fail so no actual score. My results said I did just above average on all areas so I must have gOtten at least 70 percent right. That's what they think is the passing score. I was the only accountant in my boot camp class and I just smiled when they discussed depreciation or direct costs.

I would highly recommend those audio CDs. They were easy to listen to and really helped.

@jjm1181: Yeah, but what was your rating on each section (Proficient, Moderately Proficient or Below Proficient)?

To pass the PMP you need to have both:

A minimum of MP across the board in all 5 process groups AND a minimum score (estimated around 61%)

If you get a BP on any section, you better have at least one P in another section to offset it.

Strange enough I had a moderately proficient in 4 of 5 and below proficient in 1. I clearly passed by the hair on my chiney chin chin. I was told the passing score was around 70% but it was never officially published anymore.

In 2006, they said the passing score was 61%. Then starting in 2009 they stopped saying what the passing score was and just did the two-standards. They keep the passing score a secret now.

I passed the PMP with 3P's and 2MP's – much better than I expected. I used the same technique I used for the CPA – read books, do MCQ's until I puke, then clean up the puke, and then do more MCQ's.

    CONGRATS!

You destroyed that test. We should start a CPA/PMP Club. I've realized there aren't many of us out there. Are you done with certifications for a while or are you planning on starting something else next? I'm taking the CMA part 1 exam in 2 weeks and then the 2nd part on June 30th.

    Thanks!

AFAIK, I got the highest score in my class of 24 people.

I'm looking into the HIT Pro exam next. (Health IT Professional) – I've worked a little in Health IT and would love to get a job in there. Much more stable than regular IT.

I'm also thinking of going for a PhD in Accounting, so this means pound on that GMAT 🙂
