Hi! I recently passed the CPA exam and am trying to figure out the educational requirements and how many credits I would still need to take. I wasn’t an accounting major and went to school in California, so I really am not sure where I stand for the NY CPA license. I’m trying to go through my transcript and see how many additional classes I should take. I called the state board to see if they could give me any guidance and they said they couldn’t until I submitted my entire application, including the work experience form. I’m in the middle of getting my work experience done so I can’t do that, and I’m really not sure what to do since I wanted to finish up my work experience and educational requirements at the same time. I’ve even tried asking general questions about the 33 business requirements, like if math classes would count as my college in California said they would for CA’s license, but I haven’t gotten any information. Are there any resources that could help with this? Is this something anyone’s had any experience/luck with? Any help would be appreciated, thank you so much!

Just a quick add-on: I'm concerned with the 36 business credits and 33 accounting credits (mixed up the numbers in the original post). Is there any way to get evaluated before submitting my application or get some information about which classes would be accepted? Or even classes/course titles they have previously accepted for people on here? Thank you so, so much for your help!!

Hi. I understand your concern. It can be confusing. I’m a newly-minted CPA since February.

I changed careers from being a paralegal. My undergrad is in Journalism. So I had to start from scratch. I think if you compare your transcripts with what is listed on SUNY Old Westbury’s masters in accounting page for no degree track that should give you a rough idea of if you meet the requirements.

I took 68 credit hours at Suffolk Community (dont remember how many classes that was) and 4 classes at SUNY Old Westbury. That slate of classes qualified me under the 150 rule.

I’m in no way pushing for Old Westbury. But that’s where I went. I’d imagine other businesses schools have a similar non degree track but I know of that one.
