Notice to Schedule Expiration

Due to poor planning and life itself my notice to schedule expires on 7/2. I am scheduled for audit (my last part) on 7/2 but don’t feel like I am going to be ready. I know I want to take it in the first window of July/August. If I don’t pass then I have Oct and possibly Jan before my other tests expire. Should I go with my feeling or push through with it and try and take it on 7/2?

If I don’t take it do I just not show (will I be able to get another notice to schedule for July/August if I do that)? Or do I pay the $35 and cancel my appointment and then apply for another notice to schedule

You cannot pay a fee to reschedule a test beyond the date on your NTS. If you take it and don't pass you at least get the experience (not sure if you sat for any parts or not yet) but if you don't take it on July 2nd, then you'll be out the money and have to pay in again for it anyways.

I'd probably at least give it a try because you'll be out of the money if you don't. You'll at least be able to gage yourself at that point with others taking the exam and how you stack up compared to them. Just my two cents, but only you know what is best for you.

Didn't you take it already twice? Then, I'd say go for it and try again on July 2. If you pass, you are done. If not, at least your money are not wasted.

I agree! I was in a similar situation with AUD. I decided it was a roll of the dice. I took off a few extra days from work to cram and did MCQ from cpareviewforfree.com during my lunch breaks. It was worth it for me.

I was in the same situation in Q2 2010 for FAR: Basically you have 3 options:

    1. No show ==> do not do this, as far as I know it counts as exam taken and you CAN NOT retake it within Q3. Check back with the CPA exam hotline.

    2. Give it a shot on July 2nd ==> if you think you are not prepared why should you take the exam??? Unless you really need to save money. Otherwise you might fail and need to wait until Q4 Oct/Nov to retake it. . . All knowledge will be gone by then. Plus: Will you have time in Oct/Nov in case you fail on Jul 2nd?

    3. Cancel & pay the 35 bucks cancelation fees (I know it sucks and doesn't make sense that cancelling costs money, but no show doesn't), and take it when you are better prepared within Q3 and just knock that one off. I did it this way and am happy that I have done it. It depends on if you wanna invest the 300 buck re-registration charge. For me it paid off, and since I passed I really do not spend a second any more on thinking about waht I could have used the 300bucks for.

Option no. 3 sounds best to me, but still depends on your individual feeling. In any case: Good luck!

Thanks for the varied responses. Mindfly, I have the same fear about #1 and that is the crux of my question. I asked the state cpa board and they indicated that I could get another notice to schedule for the same quarter even if I was a no show. However, they generally are not very helpful (worst customer service of any organization I have come across- answer to everyone question is check our web site) and I have had answers from them before where when it actually comes down to action the answer changes. I don't want their misinformation to mess up my schedule again.

Money matters to everyone but in this case I want to do whatever gives me the best/most chances at passing for this quarter. I'll take the next day or two to decide what to do and take it from there. After that, the cancellation fee goes up even more.

wahoo, I totally agree with you. The CPA-exam hotline wasn't very helpful to me either – regarding this matter. I chose to be on the safe side and cancelled, paid actually the higher 90-something dollars. Yeah, it financially hurt at that point of time, especially the additional re-registration fees. But now, since I know that I am done since Tuesday I do not even care, if my favorite sports team looses. . .

I keep my fingers crossed for you. It's wise of you to take a few days to make this decision.

If your decision is between #1no-show or #3cancel, my advice would be clear. Cancel for 35 dollars and be on the safe side. Because the cpa board will for sure not take the blame, if they gave you wrong information regarding no show.

If your decision is between #2taking it on 2 Jul or cancelling, it really depends on how you feel about you preperation.

And look at it from this way: If you study 3 weeks longer and assume you would spend 100 bucks a week for leisure activities, if you weren't studying, then you just ‘earned' all re-registration and cancellation fees. *j/k* I know the fun part is missing with studying instead of having fun with friends. . .

    Good luck!

Just buckle up and take the exam. I started studying for audit a week before my exam due to some unforseen circumstances and still ended up passing.

There isnt any point in not taking it since its wasted anyway, you might as well try.
