Experience requirement

    Hello Fellow members,

I have been working with H & R Block as tax advisor for the last 2 years. I have cleared my CPA exam in the state of Colorado and would like to apply for my license here. Does my experience as tax advisor count towards the 1800 hours required in industry as experience hours for CPA license .

Another question is regarding the Ethics Exam. What is the validity of the Ethics Exams. DO I have to take the exams just before I apply for the license ?

    Thanks
    Jui Buch

I'm not sure about the CO laws. Have you been working under the supervision of a CPA at H&R Block?
NY previously had a 2 year, 2000 hour audit requirement.
In 2009 that was changed to 2 years of experience, or 1 year with a 150 hour degree, and the experience was opened up to just about all areas of accounting.
I would think a tax preparer, working in an H&R office that had a CPA as a supervisor, or if you can find one in the organization (presumably familiar with your work) that might be willing to sign off, that will likely be acceptable, but each state has it's own rules.
I'd encourage you to go to the CO CPA board website to research and learn more.

I used 600 H&R block hours to help meet the requirement, but I was not licensed in CO.

Read carefully to determine if your hours must be supervised by a CPA or simply verified by a CPA and if tax preparation qualifies.

Like the above poster said, please make sure to check the CO Board of Accountancy site.

Qualifying industry experience consists of performing services, including for an employer,
primarily involving the application of the standards described in Rule 4.1.B. Such services may
include, but are not limited to, internal audit, installation of internal control systems, preparing
Financial Statements, management advisory or consulting services, preparing tax returns, or
    furnishing advice on tax matters.

The above is the paragraph from the Rules of State Board of Accountancy Colorado .

    Please advice one more time.

    Thanks

It seems pretty straight forward to me. Preparing tax returns, and advising on tax returns appears to qualify.

Now the question. Have you been working full time, or part time for H&R Block?
Or full time for tax season only?

NY allows part time work – any week over 20 hours = .5 weeks
There is no allowance for OT hours in a given week.

The more important question is if you have a CPA to sign off on your experience/hours.

Colorado does not require direct supervision by a CPA but it does require a CPA to sign off on your experience. Do you meet Colorado's extra audit education requirements? You can take the exam without meeting that education requirement but will need it for a license. Colorado uses NASBA licensing services, so you can also submit questions to NASBA and get definitive answers. You can read through the rules below.
