Does everyone have to take the ethics exam? I think some of the bigger states (CA and NY?) have their own but what about everyone else… do we have to take it too?

I googled and found the AICPA's course on Professional Ethics but it showed 3 options as CPE credits and I'm just not sure what to do or where to go. I looked on my state board's website and didn't find anything. Thanks in advance!n

I'm in CA and we have our own and it's mandatory, I'm not sure about all the other states. I'm actually going to buy it online tonight so I can get started on it. My state board has a CPA handbook, and that's how I found out where I am supposed to buy the ethics book/exam.

I also suspect that they'll send me something in the mail when my credit for the final test gets registered with the Board. Maybe that's how they do it for you guys? You'll get a packet in the mail with the rest of the licensing information?n

In SC, we have to complete the AICPA ethics course, it does qualify for CE too. Maybe that's added incentive?n

I concur, jencpa. I'm in GA & I have no idea if I'm supposed to take this ethics exam. I'm also transferring my scores to VA & they require an ethics exam. I wonder if I can transfer my ethics exam from VA to GA…n

Thanks for the responses! I hoped that I'd recieve some info with my congratulatory letter but since that could take weeks; I thouht I could get that out of the way. I'll email a friend who passed a few years ago and see if she remembers. Glad I'm not the only one in the dark about this!n

Antia, sorry I'm not sure about NY.

I did e-mail a former co-worker who was licensed a few years ago and she said in Indiana she did not take an ethics exam. So apparently it's not a uniform thing and varies by state. So maybe if you can not find information about it on your state board of accountancy website or through searching the internet, then there is no exam required in your state?n

iumike – I have searched the IN Board of Accountancy and did not find anything. I did just send an e-mail to them and will let you know what I hear back. I was the one who e-mailed a friend about it and she said she did not have to take it to get licensed.
nIllinois does require it, so I'm not sure if there is confusion there or if someone was licensed in 2 states, they may have taken the IL ethics exam to become licensed there (if they received a job in Chicago for example).n

IUMike- Just wanted to say I haven't received anything back from the IN Board. I'll keep you informed though. Have you received your paper score yet? I'm hoping something comes in there explaining what to do next. I talked to another coworker (who was licensed several years ago, when it was paper & pencil) and there was no ethics exam then. I wish I had someone who was recently licensed to discuss with.n

Based on my discussion with a board of accountancy member in KS it is on a state by state basis and it is probably best to contact them and find out whether or not you need to do an ethics exam. I know in KS it is required before you can receive your certificate.n
