Since I’m going into consulting and not an actual public accounting firm (and my mangers are not CPAs) I don’t think I’ll be able to get my work experienced signed off in my first job, which will be at least for a couple years as I plan to pass all 4 tests by February of this year which is also when I start work.

I know once you pass the tests they send you a certificate, does this hold any weight when looking for jobs? For example, say 2 years or 3 years down the line I want to apply to a big 4 as an experienced hire, would I be able to say I have my CPA certificate and have it mean anything? Or is it license or nothing?

It depends on the company. Some just care if you passed the CPA exam, some want you to be licensed. Its good that your states offers a certificate. Here in FL, there is no such thing as a certificate. If you dont get your license within 36 months after receiveing licensure packet (which is mailed in the first month of testing window following the window when you passed your last test), then FL wants you to retake the exam.

I would read the language of the statute or rule regarding the experience requirement. You job might qualify. FL has some broad language that allows many jobs to qualify as experience.n

oh yea my job definitely qualifies, it's just my managers aren't supervisors so they wouldn't be able to sign off on my work experience :/n

FL board rules have their own definition of a supervisor (and the definition is pretty broad). I would check the rules and statutes of your state and they might fit your state's definition of a supervisor.n

thnx acrua, I'll give the CA board a call once i get my packet, the online rules aren't exactly clear…I've read through the entire booklet on rules and all I've gathered is that my work does count for general experience, but no where do they state a time limit to get that experience or if the supervision must be direct.n
