I just got news this week that I passed my 3rd exam, audit. Before taking audit, I started to prepare to take FAR, but ended up deciding I didn’t have the amount of motivation needed at the time to do it. I actually had made it all the way through the Gleim study materials and was averaging around a 50% overall when I decided to switch to audit instead. I think I was intimidated and I didn’t want to fail. Now, I have the other 3 exams under my belt and am forced to face the beast. The subject matter is by far the most difficult for me because frankly I don’t have much interest, it is dry, and I am terrible at calculations. I need some advice on how to push through and get my practice scores up so I can pass this last exam. Anyone have any tips on how to get motivated, how to get interested in the material, and how to increase my scores? So far I have been following the Gleim approach – which has worked wonders on the other exams – and I do not plan on putting out any more money for additional study materials.

I'll add my voice as misery loves company. I don't think I find it as dry, as I work in private and so much of this stuff is my job, but when I get questions wrong I start second guessing if I'm even qualified to do my job. I feel like I get the bigger picture, but sometimes I'll miss a small detail, which of course throws my whole calc off. And I'm REALLY great at misinterpreting questions. I'm ok at math but very slow. I'm concerned about having enough time finish everything. I haven't done any practice exams, but for FAR I think I might just to see how my pacing is since when I'm just working MCQs I dig into my wrong answers. It's pretty amazing how 37 days can feel so dreadfully long and ridiculously short at the same time. I'm trying to imagine myself with only one left to go and how amazing that would feel. At this point it seems about as likely as Santa bringing me a unicorn for Christmas. Enjoy your light at the end of the tunnel and good luck getting out of the tunnel and into the sun!

All I can say is that it goes by faster than you might think right now. I started studying about a year ago (the first 3 months I was studying for the CIA though), and I can't believe a year has already passed by. It is crazy to think that I have been spending almost every spare waking moment studying for an exam. The idea of being done is actually kind of scary in a twisted way. I know I will be excited to get back to a normal life, and my wife will definitely be glad to have me around more again, but I do think it will be weird those first few nights and weekends where I get to just relax and enjoy myself. Look at me counting my chickens before they hatch! Gotta get back to studying for FAR! This thing is awful!

@pickanicken – I totally get it! It's weird to think what it'll be like to have our evenings and weekends back. Not even sure yet what I'll do with all that time on my hands…but I'm sure I'll figure it out! šŸ˜‰ When are you taking the exam? I feel like some of the material is starting to make more sense and come together for me, but I still have a long way to go. At least I have four more weeks to try and get this stuff figured out.

@ASUalum I am actually taking it the same day as you – 5/2. I haven't made it through all the material yet… only at about the 50% mark. I have felt like it is progressively getting more difficult but I haven't gone back to review anything to test my retention of the material yet. Any tips you have picked up so far while studying?

Right now I've been studying payables and taxes, and have been getting killed with all the income tax accounting stuff.

@pickanicken – My only suggestion is to get through all of the material once and then start going back through your notes and reviewing the sections you really struggled with. It seems like sometimes the things that made no sense before will click after having studied other material in the meantime. I've definitely forgotten a lot (most) of the material already, but I'm hoping it comes back to me like what happened while studying for the other exams. Fingers crossed that May 2nd is our lucky day!!
